พระราชาผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ได้ทำการจัดงานคัดเลือกรัชทายาทผู้สืบทอดของตน และได้มีผู้เข้าร่วมที่ร่ำรวยมากมาย และเด็กหนุ่มผู้ยากจน จะมีโอกาสในการคัดเลือกรัชทายาทหรือไม่ ไปอ่านกันเลยค่ะ
กาลครั้งหนึ่ง ณ เมืองใหญ่ในนครวารี มีการจัดพิธีค้นหารัชทายาทเพื่อสืบราชบัลลังก์ต่อจากพระราชาองค์ปัจจุบันขึ้น ข่าวนี้แพร่สะพัดไปทั่วราชอาณาจักร มีผู้ที่มาสมัครเพื่อเป็นพระราชบุตรบุญธรรมมากมาย ด้วยหวังอยากจะเป็นพระราชาสืบทอดราชบัลลังก์ต่อไป
“คุณสมบัติคือ ต้องเป็นบุคคลที่มีความรักในศาสนา และรักเพื่อนบ้านของตนเท่านั้น” เสียงทหารที่กำลังขี่ม้าตะโกนร้องบอกประชาชน ก่อนที่ตนเองจะลงจากหลังม้าแล้วติดป้ายประกาศคุณสมบัติของผู้สมัคร
“ท่านทหารเจ้าขา แล้วอย่างลูกข้า ทั้งหล่อ ทั้งใจดี เรียนเก่ง แบบนี้ พอมีสิทธิ์ไหมเจ้าคะ”
“คุณสมบัติตามนี้เท่านั้น อ่านแล้วก็ส่งลูกหลานมาเข้ารับการคัดเลือกได้เลย” ทหารตะโกนบอก
ทุกคนในตลาดต่างตื่นเต้น และพูดคุยกันด้วยน้ำเสียงที่ตื่นเต้นเกี่ยวกับพิธีค้นหารัชทายาทครั้งนี้
เวลาผ่านไป พิธีค้นหารัชทายาทเพื่อสืบราชบัลลังก์ต่อจากพระราชาองค์ปัจจุบันยังคงดำเนินไปอย่างไม่สิ้นสุด พระราชาไม่พบผู้ที่มีคุณสมบัติเสียที
“ทำไมลูกข้าถึงไม่ผ่านล่ะ”
“ทำไมหลานข้าถึงตกรอบล่ะ”
“ทำไมทั้งลูกและหลานข้าถึงไม่มีใครได้สักคนเลยนะ”
ประชาชนในเมืองใหญ่ของนครวารี ต่างตั้งข้อสงสัย ว่า “ทำไม”
ไม่มีใครตอบได้ นอกจากพระราชาเท่านั้น แต่พระราชาก็ได้แต่ย้ำว่า ไม่มีใครมีคุณสมบัติเลย
วันหนึ่งมีเด็กหนุ่มชาวบ้านผู้ยากจนคนหนึ่งได้เห็นประกาศนี้เข้า ก็คิดว่า ตนเองคงไม่มีทางได้รับคัดเลือกเป็นพระราชบุตรบุญธรรมแน่ เพราะเสื้อผ้าที่สวมใส่ไม่ต่างจากผ้าขี้ริ้ว แต่ด้วยใจอยากจะเข้ารับการคัดเลือก เขาจึงพยายามทำงานอย่างหนักเพื่อซื้อเสื้อผ้าชุดใหม่ จนได้มา
เมื่อได้เสื้อผ้ามาแล้ว เขาก็นำมาสวมใส่และออกเดินทางไปยังพระราชวัง เพื่อที่จะสมัครเป็นพระราชบุตรบุญธรรมของพระราชา
แต่ในระหว่างทาง เด็กหนุ่มได้พบกับขอทานคนหนึ่งนั่งอยู่ใกล้ประตูพระราชวัง ชายชราผู้นั้นเนื้อตัวสกปรกและหนาวสั่น เด็กหนุ่มสงสารจึงถอดเสื้อผ้าชุดใหม่ที่เพิ่งได้มา ให้ชายชราใส่ และเด็กหนุ่มก็ใส่เสื้อผ้าสกปรกของชายชราผู้นั้นแทน
เด็กหนุ่มก้มลงมองตนเอง “กลับมาอยู่ในสภาพเดิมอีกแล้ว” แล้วถอนใจ แต่ในเมื่อออกเดินทางมาแล้วก็ควรเดินหน้าต่อไป เข้ารับการคัดเลือก เด็กหนุ่มเดินต่อจนมาหยุดอยู่ที่ประตูวัง
เมื่อมาถึง มีแต่ผู้คนใส่ชุดหรูหรา และพากันหัวเราะเยาะในสภาพที่เด็กหนุ่มเป็นอยู่ตอนนี้
“พระราชาเสด็จแล้ว”
เสียงดนตรีต้อนรับและผู้คนสรรเสริญ เด็กหนุ่มเมื่อเห็นพระราชาก็รู้สึกคุ้นตาขึ้นมาทันที
และเมื่อทุกคนเห็นพระราชาก็มีเสียงกระซิบที่ดังกึกก้องไปทั่วท้องพระโรงว่า
“พระราชาคือ ขอทานใส่เสื้อผ้าสกปรกที่นั่งอยู่ใกล้กับประตูวังนี่”
“พิธีค้นหารัชทายาทเพื่อสืบราชบัลลังก์ ได้สิ้นสุดลงแล้ว”
พระราชาพูดจบก็เดินลงจากบัลลังก์มาประคองเด็กหนุ่มยากจนไว้ในอ้อมแขน
“ขอต้อนรับลูกชายของข้า” ใช่แล้วพระราชาก็คือ ขอทาน และรัชทายาทของพระองค์ก็คือ ผู้ที่ยินยอมเสียสละของรักของตนเอง ความเสียสละไม่แบ่งแยกคือพื้นฐานความรักในศาสนา ส่วนการมอบของรักให้กับผู้ที่ไม่รู้จักคือการรักในเพื่อนบ้านของตน เด็กหนุ่มยากจนมีคุณสมบัติครบถ้วนตามที่พระราชาขอทานต้องการ
ตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา นครวารีก็ได้รับการปกครองด้วยใจจากเด็กหนุ่มยากจน ที่ขณะนี้ได้กลายเป็น “พระราชา” บุตรบุญธรรมของพระราชาขอทาน
The Beggar King (นิทานพระราชาขอทาน ฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ)
Once upon a time, in the large city of Vari, there was a ceremony to find an heir to the throne of the current King. This news spreads throughout the kingdom, and many men claim to be the King’s son in hopes of inheriting the throne.
“This person must possess love for thy religion and thy neighbor,” announces a soldier riding on a horse to the civilians before stepping down from the horse and posting a sign with the applicants’ qualifications.
“Mr. Soldier, sir. What about my son? He’s handsome, kind, and great at his studies. Does he stand a chance, sir?”
“These are the only qualities they must possess. Read the sign, and you can send your children to be selected,” the soldier declares.
Everyone in the market is excited and speaks excitedly about this ceremony to find the king’s heir.
Time passes by, and the ceremony to find an heir to the King’s throne continues endlessly. The King still has not found the person with the qualities he wants.
“Why wasn’t my son selected?”
“Why was my nephew eliminated?”
“Why hasn’t any of my sons or grandsons been chosen?”
The civilians in the city of Wari all wonder, “Why?”.
No one can answer, but the King keeps insisting that so far, no one has these attributes.
One day, a poor peasant sees the sign and thinks that he will never be chosen as the King’s adopted son because what he wears is no different from rags. But, with his strong desire to be selected, he works hard to find a new set of clothes until he gets it.
He puts it on when he receives his new outfit and travels to the castle to apply to become the King’s adopted son.
But on the way, the young man runs into a beggar sitting by the castle gate. The old man is dirty and shivers from the cold, so the young man pities him and gives his new clothes to the old man. He then wears the old man’s dirty clothes instead.
The young man looks down at himself, “I’m back to where I was again,” and sighs. But since he has already started his journey, he intends to keep walking to the selection ceremony. The young man walks to the castle gate and stops.
When he arrives, he sees everyone in luxurious clothes. They jeer at the young man’s appearance.
“The King has arrived.”
The sound of music welcomes the King, and the civilians receive him with praise. When the young man sees the King, he immediately feels a sense of familiarity.
When everyone sees the King, whispers resound throughout the hall,
“The King is the beggar in dirty clothes that was sitting next to the gate.”
“The ceremony to find the King’s heir has ended.”
After speaking, the King descends from his throne and holds the poor young man in his arms.
“I welcome my son.” That’s right. The King was the beggar, and the new heir was one who was willing to sacrifice his treasure. Indiscriminate sacrifice is the basis for religious love while surrendering one’s treasure to an unknown person is loving one’s neighbor. The poor young man has all the qualities that the beggar King is looking for.
From then on, the kingdom of Wari is protected by the heart of the poor young man who has now become the “King,” the adopted son of the Beggar King.
