กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้ว มีบัณฑิตผู้ยากจนคนหนึ่ง เขาคือเด็กหนุ่มผู้มีสติปัญญามาก เป็นทั้งนักกวีแถมยังมีพรสวรรค์ในการวาดรูปด้วย แต่กระนั้นเขาก็ยังยากจนและไม่เคยมีเงินติดตัวเลยแม้แต่บาทเดียว
บัณฑิตมีเพื่อนสนิทอยู่คนหนึ่ง ซึ่งเป็นเจ้าของโรงเตี๊ยมแห่งหนึ่ง บ่อยครั้งที่ผู้คนจะเห็นว่า บัณฑิตจะไปที่โรงเตี๊ยมนี้เพื่อวาดรูปและเขียนหนังสือ จิบน้ำชา เพื่อนสนิทคนนี้ดูแลเขาเป็นอย่างดีทุกอย่าง
คืนหนึ่ง บัณฑิตผู้นี้ได้เดินทางมาที่โรงเตี๊ยมเหมือนเคย แต่คราวนี้เขาไม่ได้ไปนั่งที่ประจำแต่กลับหยิบถ่านขึ้นมาแล้วเขียนรูปรูปหนึ่งไว้ที่ผนังห้อง มันคือรูปนกกระเรียน รูปงดงามทำให้ลูกค้าและเพื่อนของเขาประทับใจมาก ต่างก็มายืนเฝ้าเขาเขียนรูปจนเสร็จ เมื่อนกเริ่มเป็นรูปเป็นร่างแล้ว บัณฑิตค่อย ๆ ตั้งใจใส่รายละเอียดลงในภาพผนังของเขา เหลือเชื่อที่นกนั้นดูราวกับมีชีวิตและจิตใจ ทุกคนเห็นเหมือนกันว่า นกกระเรียนที่เป็นภาพผนังกำลังกางปีกออกและพร้อมจะบิน
เวลาผ่านไปเนิ่นนาน กว่าบัณฑิตจะเขียนรูปเสร็จ ก็กินเวลาหลายชั่วโมง บัณฑิตกล่าวกับเพื่อนสนิทของเขาว่า “ที่ผ่านมาท่านมีน้ำใจกับข้ามากนัก ข้าอยากตอบแทนท่านจึงเขียนรูปนี้ให้ ข้าขอมอบนกกระเรียนให้ท่าน แต่ขอบอกไว้ก่อนนะว่า นกกระเรียนนี้เป็นนกวิเศษ ถ้าคุณปรบมือ 3 ครั้งมันจะยืนขึ้น และเต้นระบำให้ท่านดู แต่มีเงื่อนไขว่า มันจะทำเช่นนั้นได้แค่วันละ 1 ครั้งเท่านั้น ถ้าท่านพยายามให้มันเต้นระบำอีก มันจะจากท่านไปและท่านจะไม่ได้พบมันอีกเลย”
บัณฑิตกล่าวจบก็ปรบมือขึ้น 3 ครั้ง และเจ้านกกระเรียนตัวนั้นก็ยืดตัวขึ้นอย่างสง่างาม โอ ….ช่างสวยเหลือเกิน แล้วมันก็เริ่มเต้นระบำ ลูกค้าทั้งโรงเตี๊ยมต่างตื่นตาตื่นใจอย่างยิ่ง เมื่อมันเต้นจบกระบวนท่า เจ้านกกระเรียนก็หยุดนิ่งราวกับไร้ชีวิต
หลังจากวันนั้น โรงเตี๊ยมก็คึกคักไปด้วยจำนวนผู้คนที่แห่แหนกันมาดูโชว์นกกระเรียนเต้นระบำ ธุรกิจของโรงเตี๊ยมเจริญรุ่งเรือง และที่สำคัญ เจ้าของโรงเตี๊ยมก็ปฏิบัติตามที่เพื่อนบัณฑิตเตือนอย่างเคร่งครัด ในแต่ละวัน เขาไม่เคยปรบมือเกิน 3 ครั้งเลย
คืนวันหนึ่งมีเศรษฐีหน้าเลือดคนหนึ่งเข้ามาในหมู่บ้าน และมาพักที่โรงเตี๊ยม คนในหมู่บ้านลือกันให้ลั่นว่า เศรษฐีคนนี้เป็นคนใจคอเจ้าเล่ห์ โหดร้ายมาก ไม่มีใครอยากเข้าใกล้เลย แต่เหตุผลที่เศรษฐีมาที่หมู่บ้านก็เพราะความโลภอยากได้นกกระเรียนที่ตนเองได้ยินข่าวมาว่า มีนกกระเรียนเต้นระบำได้
เศรษฐีขอพบเจ้าของโรงเตี๊ยมตามแผนที่วางมา และยืนยันว่า ต้องดูนกกระเรียนให้ได้ แต่เนื่องจากนกกระเรียนเต้นระบำได้เพียงวันละ 1 ครั้งและวันนั้นก็ได้เต้นไปแล้วด้วย เศรษฐีจึงถูกปฏิเสธ
ด้วยความโกรธจึงโยนถุงเหรียญทองคำให้กับเจ้าของโรงเตี๊ยมและยืนยันว่า จะไม่ยอมออกจากร้านเด็ดขาด
เจ้าของโรงเตี๊ยมจำยอมที่จะต้องปรบมือขึ้น 3 ครั้งเป็นครั้งที่สองของวันนั้น
นกกระเรียนยืดตัวขึ้นช้า ๆ คอตก มันยอมเต้นระบำในคืนนั้นเป็นครั้งที่สองแต่เป็นการเต้นที่ดูแล้วเศร้าสร้อยมาก ผู้คนในโรงเตี๊ยมต่างนั่งดูน้ำตาไหล
เศรษฐีโลภ บังคับให้เจ้าของโรงเตี๊ยมปรบมืออีกหลายรอบ และนกกระเรียนก็ยอมเต้นระบำทุกรอบ
ผ่านไปหลายชั่วโมง เศรษฐีพอใจกับการแสดงแล้ว จึงยอมจากโรงเตี๊ยมไป
เจ้าของโรงเตี๊ยมรู้ตัวดีว่า กำลังทำผิดคำที่พูดไว้กับเพื่อนบัณฑิต
เจ้าของโรงเตี๊ยมกำลังจะเข้าหานกกระเรียนที่นั่งคอพับอยู่
แต่แล้วเขาก็ต้องแปลกใจเมื่อเห็นบัณฑิตผู้ยากจนคนเดิมเปิดประตูเข้ามา ไม่พูดสิ่งใด เขาเดินตรงไปอุ้มนกกระเรียนซึ่งตายแล้ว ออกจากประตูโรงเตี๊ยมไปอย่างเงียบ ๆ
นับแต่นั้นมา ไม่เคยมีผู้ใดพบเห็นบัณฑิตและนกกระเรียนอีกเลย
The Dance of the Crane (นิทานระบำของนกกระเรียน ฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ)
Once upon a time, there lived a poor sage. He is a young man with incredible intelligence, a poet, and even a talent for drawing. Yet, he was still poor and never had a single penny on him.
The sage has one close friend who is the innkeeper. People will often see him at this inn drawing, writing a book, and sipping tea. His beloved friend takes great care of him.
One night, the sage comes to the inn as usual, but this time he doesn’t take his regular seat but picks up a piece of coal and draws a mural on the wall. It’s a picture of a crane. The striking image impresses his friends, who stand and watch him finish his painting. When the bird begins to take shape, the sage carefully adds more detail to the mural. How incredible. It’s as if the bird has come alive. Everyone can see that the crane on the wall is spreading its wings and getting ready to fly.
Several hours pass before the sage completes his drawing. He says to his best friend, “You have been very kind to me in the past, so I wanted to repay you by drawing this picture. I give you this crane, but I want you to know it is magical. If you clap your hands 3times, it will stand up and dance for you. However, there is one condition. It can only do this once per day. If you try to make it dance again, it will leave, and you will never see it again.”
After he finishes his speech, the sage claps his hands 3times, and the crane stands up elegantly. Wow…. how exquisite. Then, it started dancing, and all of the inn’s customers were amazed. When it finished the dance, the crane stood still as if lifeless again.
After that day, the inn bustles with people who flock in to see the crane dance. The inn’s business prospered, and more importantly, the owner strictly followed the sage’s instructions and never clapped more than 3times a day.
One day, a greedy rich man arrives at the village and stays at the inn. The villagers spread the rumor that this rich man is a cunning and cruel person, and no one wants to go near him. But the man came to this village because of his greed for the crane that he’s heard can dance.
The wealthy man asks to meet the innkeeper as planned and insists that he sees the crane. However, since it can only dance just once a day, the man is rejected.
Angrily, he throws a bag of gold coins to the innkeeper and insists that he will not leave the inn. The owner is forced to clap his hands 3 times for the second time that day.
The crane slowly stretches, its neck drooping. I was willing to dance for the second time, but it was a very sad dance. The audience at the inn watched with tears flowing.
The greedy rich man forced the innkeeper to clap many more times, and the crane was willing to dance in each round. Several hours pass, and finally, the wealthy man is happy with the performance and agrees to leave.
The innkeeper knows that he has broken the promise he made to his dear friend, the sage. As he approaches the crane sitting with a folded neck, he is surprised to see the same poor sage walk through the door. The sage doesn’t say anything but walks straight to carry the dead crane and quietly walks out the door of the inn.
Since that day, no one has ever seen the sage and crane again.
