เจ้าลาแสนรู้ได้ออกเดินทางไปกับเจ้าของ และชายหนุ่มที่มาว่าจ้าง ท่ามกลางอากาศแสนร้อนกับความเหน็ดเหนื่อย ทำให้เจ้าของลาและชายหนุ่มเริ่มทะเลาะกัน แล้วเจ้าลาแสนรู้จะทำอย่างไรกับผู้คนขี้โมโหนี้กันนะ
ในฤดูร้อนของปี ชายหนุ่มคนหนึ่งต้องการเดินทางไปยังหมู่บ้านเล็กๆ ที่อยู่ห่างไกล แห้งแล้ง และอากาศร้อนมาก ตลอดเส้นทางมีแต่ดินแข็งๆ หยาบ ไม่เรียบ ไม่มีต้นไม้ใหญ่ให้ร่มเงา มีแต่ต้นหญ้าเล็กๆ แห้งๆ ไม่สดชื่น ไม่มีบ่อน้ำ นานๆ จึงจะมีลมพัดมาบ้าง เบาๆ ชายหนุ่มต้องไปที่หมู่บ้านแห่งนี้เพราะอยากกลับไปเยี่ยมพ่อแม่พี่น้องที่เขาจากมานาน เนื่องจากเขาต้องเดินทางไปทำงานหลายที่
เมื่อจะกลับไปเยี่ยมบ้านเดิม เขาจึงหาของฝากไปให้พ่อแม่และพี่น้อง รวมทั้งเพื่อนบ้านเก่าๆ ด้วย ดังนั้น เขาจึงมีข้าวของที่ต้องนำติดตัวไปด้วยหลายอย่าง
เขาตัดสินใจไปติดต่อกับเจ้าของลา ชายหนุ่มบอกความต้องการของเขา
“คือฉันต้องการจ้างลาของแก ขนของไปให้ฉัน และให้ฉันนั่งหลังลาไปด้วย”
เจ้าของลาหันไปถามความเห็นของลาตัวโปรดก่อนรับงานว่า
“หึหึ ว่ายังไงเจ้าลา มีลูกค้าจ้างเจ้าไปทำงานแล้ว สนใจหรือเปล่า”
ลาตัวนี้เป็นลาแสนรู้ มันสามารถเข้าใจภาษาที่คนพูดคุยกัน และท่าทางที่คนแสดงออกต่อมันได้ เจ้าลาส่งเสียงร้องตอบเจ้าของไปว่า
“ฮา ฮี้ ฮา ฮา ฮี้ ฮา” พร้อมกับผงกหัวหงึกๆ อ้าปากยิ้มยิงฟัน เห็นฟันซี่โตๆ เป็นการยอมรับที่มีคนมาให้งานมันทำ และดีใจที่นายของมันจะได้เงิน เจ้าของลาจึงตกลงรับจ้าง
ในการเดินทาง เจ้าของลาต้องเดินจูงลาไปตลอดเส้นทาง สองคนกับหนึ่งตัวออกเดินทางไปด้วยกัน แดดร้อนจัดมาก ทำให้หิวกระหายน้ำไปตามๆ กัน
ชายหนุ่มเอากระบอกน้ำที่ติดตัวไปด้วยออกมาจิบน้ำ ชายเจ้าของลาก็จิบน้ำจากกระบอกของตน ส่วนเจ้าลาแสนรู้เป็นสัตว์อดทน กีบเท้าแข็งแรง มั่นคง เดินทางไกลได้ดี มันจึงไม่มีปัญหา
“ฉันไม่เห็นจะหิวน้ำเลย เป็นคนนี่ไม่แข็งแรงซะเลย” เจ้าลาแอบบ่นมนุษย์ในใจ
เดินทางกันไปนานขึ้นเรื่อยๆแดดยิ่งร้อนจัดแรงขึ้น
“เฮ้ย ร้อนอะไรอย่างนี้เนี่ย จะร้อนไปถึงไหนกัน ฮื่อ” ชายหนุ่มบ่นโวยวายทั้งที่ตนเองนั่งอยู่บนหลังลา และได้จิบน้ำดับความหิวกระหายแล้ว แต่ก็ยังไม่พอใจ ชายเจ้าของลาโต้ตอบด้วยความรำคาญใจว่า
“หึ นายยิ่งบ่น ยิ่งร้อนกาย ร้อนใจ”
ชายหนุ่มไม่พอใจที่ชายเจ้าของลามาบ่นเขา จึงพูดว่า
“ฉันจะบ่นอะไรมันก็เรื่องของฉัน ไม่ใช่เรื่องของแก”
อารมณ์ของทั้งสองคนเริ่มร้อนตามแสงแดด ลาแสนรู้มองดูชายหนุ่มที่เป็นลูกค้าของเขาและเหลือบตาดูเจ้านาย พลางคิดตามประสาลาแสนฉลาดว่า
“เฮ้อ คนน่ะชอบคิดแต่เรื่องของตนเอง เอาสะดวกสบาย เฮ้ย ฉันน่ะต้องแบกทั้งคนทั้งของ ยังไม่บ่นเลย”
ความร้อนรุนแรงมากขึ้น ชายหนุ่มจึงพูดขึ้นว่า
“เอาอย่างนี้ เราหยุดพักกันก่อน ฉันเหนื่อยแล้วก็ร้อนมากเลย”
แสงแดดร้อนแรงจัด ทำให้เกิดเงาใหญ่จากตัวลา เขาจึงเข้านั่งพักในร่มเงานั้น เจ้าของลาคิดว่า ชายคนนี้เอาเปรียบ เขาเองก็ร้อนและเหนื่อยเหมือนกัน ต้องเดินจูงลามาตลอดทาง
“นายจ้างแค่ลาของฉันเท่านั้น ไม่ได้จ้างเงาที่เกิดจากตัวลาของฉันด้วย แล้วนายก็ไม่ได้จ้างฉัน แต่ฉันต้องเดินมากับนาย จูงลาให้นาย ฉันจะคิดเงินเพิ่ม เพราะฉันเหนื่อยมากกว่านายอีก”
ชายหนุ่มไม่พอใจที่เจ้าของลาพูดแบบนี้ เถียงกลับว่า
“แกเป็นเจ้าของลา ฉันจ้างลา แกก็ต้องดูแลลาของแกด้วยสิ”
ได้ฟังดังนั้น ชายเจ้าของลายิ่งโกรธมากขึ้น
“นายขี้โกง เอาเปรียบ ฉันจะเอาค่าจ้างเพิ่ม”
ชายสองคนทะเลาะกันดังลั่น ต่อหน้าเจ้าลา เจ้าลานิ่งฟังเรื่องต่อไป ครั้งนี้ลูกค้าของเจ้าลาโกรธหน้าแดงก่ำ ตะโกนตอบกลับไปว่า
“ฉันไม่ให้ เราตกลงราคากันแค่นี้ เงาลาที่เกิดขึ้นไม่ได้ทำให้แกต้องใช้สิ่งใดเพิ่มสักหน่อย”
ชายเจ้าของลาก็ไม่ยอมเช่นกัน ต่างโต้เถียงกัน และใช้คำรุนแรงขึ้นทุกที ลาแสนรู้เห็นท่าไม่ดีแน่แล้ว จึงร้องขึ้นเสียงดัง พลางส่ายหัวไปมา
“ฮา ฮี้ ฮา ฮา ฮี้ ฮา” ซ้ำๆกันอยู่เช่นนี้พร้อมแสดงกิริยาฟึดฟัดเช่นกัน
ชายเจ้าของลาซึ่งรู้นิสัยใจคอของลาเป็นอย่างดี รู้ชัดเจนว่าลาต้องการห้ามเขาไม่ให้ทะเลาะกัน ไม่ให้ใช้ความรุนแรงเข้าหากัน แต่ตอนนั้นอารมณ์ของพวกเขาทั้งสองไม่สามารถมีใครหรืออะไรมาห้ามความโกรธได้ พวกเขาขาดสติกันแล้ว ทั้งสองคนกระโจนเข้าหากัน ชกต่อยกันอย่างแรง (เสียงต่อยกัน) ปากก็ร้องตะโกนด่าว่ากัน ว่าอีกฝ่ายเอาเปรียบ
ลาแสนรู้ยืนมองด้วยความสลดใจ รู้ดีว่าไม่สามารถห้ามผู้ใดได้อีกแล้ว ทั้งสองคนต่างไม่ยอมกัน และเจ้านายของมันก็ไม่ยอมรับรู้และรับฟังความคิดของมันเหมือนครั้งก่อนๆ
ลาจึงตัดสินใจละทิ้งคนที่มีแต่ความโกรธและเข้าทำร้ายกัน มันสะบัดสิ่งของที่อยู่บนหลังมันทั้งหมดลงพื้น แล้วออกเดินไปจากที่นั่นทันที
ชายสองคนเมื่อต่อสู้กันจนหมดแรง ก็ล้มตัวลงนอนแผ่ หายใจหอบ ทั้งเหนื่อย ทั้งหิวกระหายน้ำ มือควานหากระบอกน้ำของตนเอง หลังจากได้ดื่มน้ำจนหมดความกระหายแล้วจึงได้สติ เมื่อเห็นสิ่งของกระจัดกระจายอยู่ข้างหน้า ต่างมองหาลา เห็นมันเดินออกไปไกลแล้ว
“เจ้าลา เจ้าลาของข้า เจ้าลาแสนรู้ กลับมาก่อน อย่าทิ้งข้าไปแบบนี้ โอย อื้อ” เจ้าของลาตะโกนเรียกเจ้าลาคู่ใจ ถึงแม้จะอยู่ห่างกัน แต่ลาก็ยังได้ยินเสียงเจ้านายเรียกอย่างสุดเสียงได้ชัดเจน มันหยุดเดินและหันมามอง เห็นชายทั้งสองคนวิ่งตามมันมา ด้วยความรักความผูกพันต่อเจ้าของ ลาไม่สามารถทิ้งเจ้านายมันได้ มันจึงเดินกลับมา เห็นเจ้านายของมันวิ่งเหนื่อยหอบ เหงื่อไหลท่วมตัว เช่นเดียวกับชายหนุ่มลูกค้าของมัน มันก็สงสาร ส่งเสียงร้องเรียกเจ้านาย
“ฮา อี้ ฮา ฮา ฮี้ ฮา” หลายครั้ง พร้อมกับเดินเข้ามาเอาหัวซบไหล่เจ้านาย
เจ้านายดีใจมาก โผเข้ากอดคอเจ้าลาด้วยความซาบซึ้งใจ แล้วพูดว่า

จากนั้น ชายหนุ่มก็เดินเข้ามาลูบหัวลาแสนรู้
“ขอบใจนะเจ้าลาน้อย ฉันจะไม่เอาเปรียบใครอีกแล้ว”
ลาเข้าใจสิ่งที่ชายสองคนบอกมัน มันส่งเสียงร้อง
“ฮา อี้ ฮา ฮา ฮี้ ฮา” อ้าปากยิ้มยิงฟัน เห็นฟันซี่โตๆ แสดงการรับรู้
ชายสองคนกับลาหนึ่งตัวเดินกลับมาด้วยกันจนถึงตรงที่ข้าวของตกหล่นอยู่ ชายหนุ่มและเจ้าของลาช่วยกันเก็บของขึ้นหลังลา แล้วออกเดินทางไปด้วยกันอย่างสงบสุขและเข้าใจกัน จนถึงหมู่บ้านอันห่างไกล
The Donkey and His Shadow (นิทานลากับเงา ฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ)
One summer day, a young man wanted to travel to a small village far away, dry and very hot. Along the way, there was hard, rough, uneven soil without large trees to provide any shade. There was only a small patch of dry grass and no wells. Once in a while, a slight breeze blew. This young man wanted to go to this village to visit his parents and siblings, whom he had long since left because he had to work in many places. When returning to visit his original home, he brought souvenirs for his parents, siblings, and even old neighbors. Therefore, he carried a lot of things with him.
He decided to contact the owner of the donkey. The young man told him his wish.
“I want to hire your donkey to carry my things and let me sit on his back.”
The owner of the donkey turned to ask his favorite donkey's opinion before accepting the job.
“Hey, what's up, donkey? A customer wants to hire you. Are you interested?”
This donkey is smart and can understand human language and how people react to him. The donkey called out to its owner,
“Hee-haw, hee-haw,” while nodding his head with his mouth grinning widely to show his big teeth as an acceptance for the job. He was glad that his master would be able to make some money. The owner of the donkey, therefore, accepted the job.
On the journey, the owner of the donkey must lead the donkey all the way. Two people and one donkey were traveling together under a very hot sun, which made them thirsty and hungry.
The young man took out the water bottle he had with him and took a sip. The donkey's owner took a sip of water from his mouthpiece. The smart donkey, on the other hand, is a patient animal. His hooves are strong, stable, and can travel well over long distances. So, this was not a problem for him.
“I’m not even thirsty at all. Humans are so weak,” the donkey secretly complained about humans to himself.
The longer they traveled, the hotter and stronger the sun became.
“Hey, what is this heat? How much hotter will it get, huh?” The young man yelled as he sat on the donkey and took a sip of water to quench his thirst. The owner of the donkey responded annoyedly,
“Pfft, the more you complain, the hotter you will get.”
The young man was displeased that the donkey’s owner complained to him, so he said,
“If I want to complain, that’s my business. Not yours."
Both of their emotions heated up with the sunlight. The smart donkey looked at the young man who was his client and glanced at his master while thinking with his wise mind,
“(Sigh) Humans like to think only of themselves and only care for their own comfort. I have to carry both people and things, and I have yet to complain.”
The heat intensified, and the young man then said,
“Come on, let's take a break. I am tired and very hot.”
The scorching sun casts a shadow on the donkey, so they sit in the shade. The donkey’s owner thought that this man was taking advantage of him. He, too, was hot and tired, having to walk and lead the donkey all the way.
“You’re hiring only my donkey, not the shadow cast by him or me. But I have to walk with you and lead the donkey for you. So, I'll charge you more because I'm more tired than you."
The young man was displeased that the owner of the donkey said this and argued back,
“You own the donkey, I hire the donkey, and you have to take care of your donkey too.”
Having heard this, the donkey's owner became even angrier.
“You cheat and take advantage of us; I want more money.”
The two men quarreled loudly in front of the donkey while the donkey listened still. This time, the customer was so angry his face was flushed. He shouted in reply,
“I refuse. We already agreed on the price. The shadow formed from the donkey doesn't require you to expend more energy.”
The owner of the donkey also refused. They argued and used harsher and harsher words each time. The wise donkey saw the fight spiraling and shouted loudly while shaking his head,
“Hee-haw, hee-haw!” repeatedly, while acting furiously.
The owner of the donkey knew the donkey’s personality well. Clearly, the donkey wanted to stop him from arguing, not to use. But at that time, both of their emotions could not be stopped by anyone or anything. They've lost their senses. The two of them pounced on each other and threw heavy punches (the sound of fighting). They were yelling that each one had taken advantage of the other.
The wise donkey stood and looked dejectedly. He knew that he couldn’t stop them anymore. No one was willing to relent, and his master did not acknowledge or listen to his words.
The donkey decided to abandon the angry people who were attacking each other. He flicked all the objects on his back to the ground and immediately walked away from the scene.
The two men fought until they were exhausted. They lay down panting, exhausted, hungry, and thirsty. Their hands reached for their water bottles. After drinking water until the thirst was gone, they regained consciousness. When they saw the things scattered in front of them, they looked for the donkey and saw that it was already walking away.
“Donkey, my donkey, smart donkey, come back, don't leave me like this, oh,” the donkey's owner called out to his trusted donkey. Even though he was far, the donkey could still clearly hear his master's loud call. He stopped walking and turned to look. He saw the two men running after him. Due to the love and attachment he had for his owner, the donkey couldn’t abandon him. So, he walked back and saw his master running and panting after him, his body covered with sweat, the same as his young male customer. He took pity on them and called out to his master.
"Hee-haw, hee-haw," several times while walking up to put his head on his owner’s shoulder.
The owner was very happy and embraced the donkey's neck with gratitude and said,
“Thank you, the donkey, for giving me a lesson. I won't be impatient or argue with anyone anymore.”
Then, the young man came over and rubbed the head of the intelligent donkey.
“Thank you, little donkey. I will never take advantage of anyone again.”
The donkey understood what the two men said to him and called,
“Hee-haw, hee-haw,” his grinning mouth opened wide, showing his large teeth as a sign of acknowledgment.
Two men and the donkey walked back together until they reached the place where their belongings had been scattered. The young man and the donkey’s owner helped to put his things up the donkey's back and traveled together with peace and understanding to a distant village.
