ในป่าใหญ่แห่งหนึ่ง มีต้นไม้หลายต้นขึ้นอยู่ บางชนิดมีดอกไม้สวยงาม บางชนิดมีผลไม้ให้สัตว์ต่าง ๆ ได้กินเป็นอาหาร สัตว์มากมายชอบมาที่ป่านี้ เพราะชอบมาหาผลไม้อร่อยกิน รวมทั้งฝูงลิงน้อยซึ่งมีเจ้าจุกเป็นหัวหน้าฝูง รวมอยู่ในกลุ่มนั้นด้วย วันนี้ฝูงลิงคุยกันเรื่องผลไม้ที่อร่อยที่สุดและมีสัตว์มากินมากที่สุด คือองุ่น ต้นองุ่นเลื้อยเกาะตามกิ่งก้านของต้นไม้ มีเถาองุ่นเป็นมือเกาะ ออกลูกเป็นพวงห้อยลงมามากมาย
เจ้าจุกเป็นลิงน้อยแสนฉลาด มันชี้ให้เพื่อนดูองุ่นต้นหนึ่ง แล้วบอกว่า “พวกแกเห็นมั้ยองุ่นต้นนั้นน่ะ ไม่เหมือนต้นอื่น เป็นต้นไม้วิเศษ” ลิงน้อยทุกตัวหันไปดูตาม เห็นองุ่นต้นนั้นใหญ่โต ดูแข็งแรงกว่าต้นอื่น ๆ ออกลูกเป็นพวงใหญ่มาก และลูกที่เกาะกันเป็นพวงก็ลูกโต สีแดง ลูกลิงตัวหนึ่งถามด้วยความอยากรู้ “วิเศษไง เล่าเร็ว ๆ สิ” เจ้าจุกจึงเล่าต่อ “พวกแกดูตามข้อเถาสิ มีมือสำหรับยึดเกาะ ตรงนั้นขยับได้ด้วยนะ”

วันนี้เจ้าจุกและเพื่อน ๆ มากันเป็นฝูงใหญ่ เมื่อฟังเจ้าจุกเล่าเรื่องเสร็จ ทุกตัวพากันกระโจนลงมาจากต้นไม้ที่นั่งฟังเจ้าจุกอยู่ แล้วเก็บลูกองุ่นแสนอร่อยที่ตกอยู่ที่พื้นดินกินกันอย่างสนุกสนาน พูดจาหยอกล้อกันตามประสาลิง พออิ่มแล้วเจ้าจุกพูดนำขึ้น “ขอบคุณคร้าบพี่องุ่น ที่ให้พวกเราได้กินของดีมีประโยชน์ต่อร่างกาย” แล้วเพื่อนของเจ้าจุกอีกตัวหนึ่งก็พูดอวยชัยให้พร “ขอให้พี่องุ่นอยู่ดูแลพวกเราไปนาน ๆ นะคร้าบ” อีกหลายตัวส่งเสียงร้องขึ้นพร้อม ๆ กัน “เย้ เย้ เย้ เรารักพี่องุ่น พี่องุ่น พี่องุ่น” องุ่นวิเศษใช้มือเถาโยกพวงองุ่นไปมา ชอบใจที่ฝูงลิงน้อยมีความสุขและแข็งแรง
ในป่านี้มีหมาจิ้งจอกตัวหนึ่งนิสัยเกเร กลางวันมันชอบนอนอยู่ในโพรงดิน แล้วออกหากินตอนกลางคืน มันชอบแกล้งสัตว์ที่นอนตอนกลางคืน ด้วยการส่งเสียงร้องดัง ๆ ให้สัตว์เหล่านั้นตกใจตื่น บางทีก็วิ่งไล่สัตว์ตัวเล็ก ๆ ที่ออกมาเดินเล่นตอนกลางคืน มันชอบใจมากที่เห็นสัตว์เหล่านั้นพากันวิ่งหนี มันส่งเสียงหัวเราะดัง ๆ สนุกที่ได้แกล้งสัตว์อื่น “ฮ่าฮ่าฮ่า เอิ๊ก เอิ๊ก สนุกจัง” ไม่มีสัตว์ตัวไหนในป่าที่รักมัน เพราะมันมีนิสัยที่ไม่ดี แถมยังตัวเหม็น จึงไม่มีใครอยากเข้าใกล้
มันได้ยินสัตว์เล่าเรื่องที่ได้กินผลองุ่นวิเศษ น้ำหวานฉ่ำชุ่มคอชื่นใจ แล้วทำให้ร่างกายแข็งแรง และพวงองุ่นโน้มลงมาเองได้ มันจึงอยากไปดูบ้าง วันหนึ่งตอนกลางวันมันออกมาจากโพรงดินซึ่งเป็นที่อยู่ของมัน แล้วเดินไปหาต้นองุ่น มันเห็นองุ่นพวงใหญ่ที่สุดพวงหนึ่ง มีลูกองุ่นใหญ่มาก สีแดงสดเป็นมันน่ากิน มันนึกอยากกินขึ้นมาทันที
วันนั้นเจ้าจุกจอมฉลาดก็ชวนเพื่อน ๆ มานั่งเล่นพูดคุยกันบนต้นไม้เหมือนเดิม พวกมันเห็นหมาจิ้งจอกเกเรเดินมาแล้ว เจ้าจุกรีบบอกเพื่อน ๆ ว่า “จุ๊ จุ๊ พวกแกไม่ต้องกลัวมัน นั่งเฉย ๆ พวกเราอยู่บนต้นไม้สูง มันกระโดดไม่ถึงหรอก” เจ้าจุกเล่าต่ออีกด้วยน้ำเสียงแสดงความฉลาดว่า “ปู่ฉันเล่าให้ฟังว่า หมาจิ้งจอกแก่ ๆ อีกหน่อยก็เป็นปีศาจหมาจิ้งจอก แปลงร่างเป็นมนุษย์ได้ พวกเราอย่าไว้ใจมัน” ฝูงลิงน้อยเชื่อฟังเจ้าจุก พากันนั่งนิ่ง ๆ มองหมาจิ้งจอกตัวนั้น
หมาจิ้งจอกเดินมาอยู่ใต้ต้นองุ่น สายตาจ้องจับอยู่ที่พวงองุ่นสีแดงสดน่ากิน มันตั้งใจว่าจะกินองุ่นวิเศษพวงนั้นให้หมด ไม่เหลือให้สัตว์อื่นกินเลย เพื่อมันจะได้แข็งแรงอยู่ตัวเดียว มันพูดกับตัวมันเองว่า “ข้ามีฟันแข็งแรง แหลมคม หางยาวแข็งแรงเป็นพวง คงช่วยการกระโดดได้” แล้วมันก็กระโดดสูงขึ้นทันที หวังว่าจะงับองุ่นพวงใหญ่ได้เหมือนที่คิด แต่โชคร้าย มันงับไม่ถึง มันพยายามกระโดดสูงอีกสามครั้งแต่ไม่สำเร็จ มันโกรธมาก ตวาดเสียงดังใส่ต้นองุ่นว่า “เจ้าองุ่น ข้ารู้นะว่าแกโน้มตัวลงมาได้ รีบโน้มลงมาให้ข้ากินเร็ว ๆ อย่าให้ข้าโมโหมากกว่านี้”
องุ่นวิเศษรู้จิตใจของหมาจิ้งจอกเกเรตัวนี้ว่า ไม่มีความรักและความเมตตาให้สัตว์อื่น ไม่แบ่งปันความสุขและความอร่อย เห็นของดีมีประโยชน์ก็จะเก็บกินตัวเดียว ไม่ห่วงใยใคร ถือว่ามันเอาเปรียบสัตว์อื่นในป่านี้ องุ่นจึงทำเป็นไม่ได้ยิน มือเถาไม่โน้มพวงองุ่นลงมาให้ จึงยิ่งทำให้หมาจิ้งจอกโกรธมาก มันดุต้นองุ่นเสียงดังอีกว่า “ดีละ ข้าจะลงโทษเจ้าที่ขัดใจข้า ไม่ทำตามที่ข้าสั่ง”
แล้วมันก็เปลี่ยนวิธีการใหม่โดยใช้การกระโดดไกล มันหันหลังเดินออกไป แล้วกลับหันหน้ามาทางต้นองุ่น ออกวิ่งเต็มแรงของมัน พอมาใกล้มันก็กระโดดสูงสุดตัวเพื่องับพวงองุ่น แต่ไม่สำเร็จ ตัวมันตกลงมาที่พื้นดินเสียงดังแอ้ก มันร้องขึ้น “โอ๊ย เจ็บ” แต่เนื่องจากมันต้องการเอาชนะต้นองุ่น มันจึงทำแบบเดิมอีกสามครั้ง แต่ทุกครั้งตกลงมา ได้รับความเจ็บปวดมากขึ้นทุกที ในที่สุดมันล้มเลิกความพยายาม นั่งแหงนมองพวงองุ่นด้วยความเจ็บใจ มันพูดกับตัวเองว่า “ฮึ ข้าไม่น่าโง่ไปฟังเรื่องโกหกจากไอ้พวกนั้นเล้ย แกต้องเป็นองุ่นเปรี้ยวแน่ ๆ ไม่อยากกินแล้ว ไปดีกว่า” มันเดินจากไปด้วยความผิดหวังและเจ็บปวดร่างกาย เจ้าจุกจึงพูดกับเพื่อน ๆ ว่า “มันอดกิน เพราะมันนิสัยไม่ดี มันกระโดดงับไม่ถึง มันจึงแกล้งบอกว่าองุ่นเปรี้ยวเพื่อหลอกตัวเอง ฮ่า ฮ่า ฮ่า”

There are many trees in the vast forest. Some have beautiful flowers, and some bear fruits for animals to eat. Many animals love this forest for its delicious fruits, including a group of monkeys with Little Chuk as the leader of the pack, included in it. Today the monkeys talk about the tastiest and the most fed fruit by animals: grapes. Grapevines wind on tree branches and bear many bunches of grapes dangling down.
Little Chuk is a smart little monkey. He points to a grape tree and says to his friend, “Do you see that grape tree? It is not like other trees. It is a magical tree.” All the monkeys turn to look and see a large grape tree that looks stronger than others. It bears big bunches of grapes, with each berry large and red. A monkey curiously asks, “How is it magical? Tell me.” Little Chuk continues, “Look at the vine nodes. There are arms for gripping on, which can move.”
This magical grapevine has a special power. It can bear many large, juicy red grape bunches. All the animals that have tasted its berries are hooked. If an animal is sick, weak, or has leg pain, it only has to feed on these grapes to gain strength, and its blisters will heal faster. If an animal has poor sight, the grapes will make them see clearly. Little Chuk’s grandpa likes to feed on the grapes because it can cure his forgetfulness, while his mom also eats them because it can ease her frustration with her son’s mischievousness. If Little Chuk coughs, his mom will gather the berries to feed him. But more importantly, this grape tree has an extraordinary ability to read others’ minds if they approach the tree with sincerity and genuinely need help.
Some animals eat grapes because of their delightful taste, some eat them for food, and some feed on them as medicine. Some animals collect the fallen juicy, red berries from the ground, while some animals receive sympathy from the vines, which bend their arms to bring the grape bunches down until they can nibble or eat, such as the clever Little Chuk. If an animal has impure thoughts or bad habits, the vines will not bend. The animals love this grape tree, and they all take great care of it so it can thrive and bear them delicious berries for a long time.
Today, Little Chuk and his friends arrive in a large troop. After hearing Little Chuk’s tale, they jump down from the trees they were sitting on and deliciously feast on the fallen grape berries, teasing one another amusingly. Once they are full, Little Chuk says, “Thank you, Mr. Grapevine, for letting us eat your nutritious berries.” Then another monkey friend of Little Chuk’s blesses the tree, “I wish Mr. Grapevine will take care of us for a long, long time.” Sever other monkeys cheer, “Yeah, yeah, yeah! We love Mr. Grapevine, Mr. Grapevine, Mr. Grapevine!”. The grape tree uses its vines to sway the grape bunches back and forth, pleased that the little monkeys are happy and healthy.
However, there is a sly fox in this forest. During the day, he likes to lie in a burrow, and at night, he comes out for food. He likes to tease other animals that sleep at night by howling loudly to startle them, and sometimes he chases smaller animals that like to take a night stroll. He delights in seeing these creatures run away and laughs loudly, enjoying his own pranks, “Hahaha, how fun!”. There is no animal in the forest that likes him because of his bad nature and horrible smell. No one wants to get close to him.
He hears the story told by an animal of the magical, juicy grapes that make you strong with its bendy arms and wants to see for himself. One day he comes out of his burrow during the daytime and walks up to the grape tree. He sees the largest grape brunch with huge red berries and immediately craves it.
That day, the clever Little Chuk invites his friends to sit and talk on the tree as usual. They see the sly fox and Little Chuk hurriedly says to his friends, “Shh, shh, you guys don’t have to be scared of him. Just sit still. We’re high up on a tall tree. He won’t be able to catch us.” Little Chuk continues cleverly, “My grandfather told me that an old fox could turn into a demon fox that can transform into humans. We mustn’t trust him.” The little monkeys obey Little Chuk and sit still, looking at the fox.
The fox walks under the grape tree, eyeing the tasty-looking juicy, red berries. He intends to eat all of the magical grapes and leave none left for the other animals so only he will be strong. He says to himself, “I have strong, sharp teeth and a long, bushy tail. This will help me jump.” Then he jumps up, hoping to snatch the big bunch of grapes. Unfortunately, it is too high for him. He tries to jump three more times, but this doesn’t work. He is furious and yells at the grapevine, “Grape, I know that you can bend yourself. You must bend for me this instant so I can eat you! Don’t make me any angrier!”.
The grapevine knows that the fox has a bad heart with no love or compassion for other animals. He doesn’t share his happiness or delicious bounty with others. If he sees something good and useful, he will keep it for himself only. He cares for no one else and believes that he can take advantage of other animals in the forest. Thus, the grape tree pretends not to hear him and does not bend her grape brunch for him. This makes the fox even angrier, and he scolds the grape tree even louder, “Well, I will punish you for making me angry and disobeying my order.” He tries a different method with a long jump. He walks away, then turns back to face the grape tree. He runs with all his might and leaps as high as he can to snatch the grapes, but he misses them. He falls to the ground with a loud thud and cries, “Ow! That hurts!”. He does the same thing three more times because he wants to defeat the grape tree, but every time he falls, his pain magnifies. Eventually, he gives up and looks up at the tree with anguish. He mutters to himself, “Hmph. I was a fool to listen to the monkeys’ lies. You must be sour grapes. I don’t want to eat you anymore. I better go.” The fox walks away in disappointment and pain in his body. Little Chuk says to his friends, “He didn’t get to eat because of his bad nature. He couldn’t catch the grapes, so he pretended that they were sour to fool himself. Hahaha.”
Days pass by happily. Every day, a troop of monkeys with Little Chuk as its leader sits and lounges on the trees near the magical grape tree. Each baby monkey grows up big, strong, and happy every day by eating the nutritious berries of the grape tree.
