กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้ว มีสามีภรรยาคู่หนึ่งมีฐานะยากจน มีอาชีพเลี้ยงห่านไว้เพื่อเก็บไข่ไปขาย “ไข่ห่านจ้า ไข่สด ๆ เก็บใหม่วันต่อวัน ลองมาเลือกซื้อกันเลย” สามีร้องเรียกลูกค้าในตลาด แต่วันนี้ไม่มีใครมาซื้อไข่ห่านของเขาเลย “ขายไข่ไม่ได้เลย เฮ่อ แล้วจะเอาเงินที่ไหนซื้อข้าวกิน กลับไปโดนด่าอีกแน่เลย”
หลังจากที่เขากลับจากตลาด เมื่อภรรยาพบว่าเขาไม่สามารถขายไข่ห่านได้ จึงเอะอะโวยวายด่าว่าสามี “แค่ไข่ใบเดียวยังขายไม่ได้เลย เย็นนี้ไม่ต้องกินข้าวแล้วกัน ไม่มีเงินจะหาอะไรให้กินแล้ว” สามีหน้าเศร้าเดินกลับไปที่เล้าห่านเพื่อระบายความทุกข์ “ข้าไม่รู้จะหาเงินยังไงแล้ว เก็บไข่เอ็งขาย ก็ขายไม่ค่อยดี บางวันก็ขายได้บ้าง บางวันก็ขายไม่ได้เลย” ห่านฟังชีวิตของเจ้านายอย่างสงสาร จึงอยากช่วยให้เจ้านายมีเงินมากขึ้น คืนนั้นเจ้าห่านกตัญญูจึงขอพรเทวดา “ท่านเทวดาขอรับ ช่วยให้พรให้ไข่ห่านของข้าช่วยทำให้เจ้านายของข้ารวยด้วยเถิด ข้าสงสารเจ้านาย” เทวดาได้ยินคำร้องขอของห่านจึงเอ่ยว่า “เจ้าแน่ใจนะ ว่าเจ้าอยากให้ไข่ของเจ้าทำเงินให้แก่เจ้านายของเจ้าจริง ๆ ห่านดีใจที่เทวดาคุยด้วย จึงรีบตอบว่า “ข้าแน่ใจ ข้าสงสารเจ้านาย เจ้านายดูแลข้าอย่างดี แต่ไข่ของข้ากับช่วยอะไรเจ้านายไม่ได้เลย” เทวดาตอบรับคำขอของเจ้าห่าน “ได้ ข้าจะช่วยให้ไข่ของเจ้ากลายเป็นทองคำ เพี้ยง!” ห่านดีใจรีบไหว้ขอบคุณเทวดา พรุ่งนี้ไข่ของมันจะช่วยเจ้านายได้แล้ว
เช้าวันรุ่งขึ้น ชายเจ้าของห่านได้เข้าไปเก็บไข่ในเล้าตามปกติทุกวัน แต่ในวันนี้เขาได้สังเกตเห็นว่า มีไข่ฟองหนึ่งส่องแสงสีเหลืองทองอร่ามแวววาวก็รู้สึกแปลกใจ “เฮ้ยทำไมวันนี้ไข่มันเรืองแสงแบบนี้ อย่างกับทองคำเลย” เขาเดินเข้ามาก้มมองดูไข่ใกล้ ๆ มากขึ้น ยิ่งใกล้ยิ่งสงสัยจึงหยิบไข่ขึ้นมาดู และแล้วเมื่อหยิบขึ้นมา เขาก็ต้องแปลกใจเพราะไข่ฟองนี้คือไข่ทองคำ เขาร้องโวยวายอย่างตกใจผสมกับดีใจสุดชีวิต “เฮ้ยนี่มัน มัน มัน ไข่ทองคำ ทองคำจริง ๆ ด้วย โอ้ว เจ้าห่านเจ้าออกไข่เป็นทองคำได้ยังไง” ห่านยิ้มอย่างภูมิใจที่ได้ช่วยเจ้านาย แล้วตอบว่า “ข้าไปขอพรจากเทวดามา เทวดาให้พรให้ในท้องข้ามีไข่ทองคำ” เมื่อได้ยินดังนั้น ชายเจ้าของห่านดีใจมาก อุ้มเจ้าห่านกระโดดโลดเต้นไปด้วยกัน และร้องตะโกนว่า “รวยแล้ว ข้าจะรวยแล้ว ขอบใจเจ้าห่านมาก”
หลังจากนั้นเป็นต้นมา ห่านตัวนี้ก็ได้ออกไข่ทองคำให้แก่เจ้านายของมันในทุกเช้า “ทำดีมาก เจ้าห่าน และไข่ทองคำของข้า” จนในที่สุดจากชายยากจน เขาได้กลายเป็นเศรษฐีที่ร่ำรวยมาก ๆ จากการขายไข่ทองคำภรรยาเลิกบ่นด่าเขา แต่คอยเอาใจ ทำอาหารให้เขากิน ส่วนตัวภรรยาก็กลายเป็นคุณนายที่กินอยู่อย่างสุขสบาย
วันหนึ่งภรรยาเกิดความโลภอยากร่ำรวยมากกว่านี้ อยากให้มีทรัพย์สินเงินทองมากกว่าที่เป็นอยู่ จึงคุยกับสามีว่า “พี่จ๊ะ ชั้นสงสัยว่าในท้องของห่านตัวนี้ มันจะต้องมีไข่ทองคำอยู่มากมายแน่ ๆ ทำไมพี่จะต้องลำบากไปเก็บไข่ขายทุกเช้าด้วย” สามีคิดตาม และก็เห็นด้วย “ใช่ ทำไมพี่จะต้องตื่นเช้าไปรอเจ้าห่านมันออกไข่ทองคำ ทั้งที่มันบอกว่า เทวดาได้ให้พรให้ในท้องมันมีไข่ทองคำ” สามีภรรยามองหน้ากันอย่างเจ้าเล่ห์ ความโลภทำให้พวกเขาลืมบุญคุณของเจ้าห่าน
เมื่อคิดได้ดังนั้น ชายเจ้าของห่านจึงวิ่งหายเข้าไปในครัว แล้วไปหยิบมีดเล่มโตคมกริบ แล้ววิ่งออกไปที่เล้าห่าน เมื่อเดินเข้าเล้า เขาได้ซ่อนมีดไว้ข้างหลัง เจ้าห่านเห็นเจ้านายมาเยี่ยมก็ดีใจ เดินเข้ามาหา ทันใดนั้นเอง ชายเจ้าของห่านก็หยิบมีดออกมา เจ้าห่านพอเห็นมีดก็ตกใจมาก รีบร้องบอกเจ้านายว่า “เจ้านายจ๋า เจ้านายจะทำอะไร” เจ้านายหน้ามืดตามัวจึงตอบไปว่า “ข้าต้องการไข่ทองคำในท้องของเจ้า” ห่านจึงร้องตอบว่า “ข้าก็ไข่ให้เจ้านายทุกเช้าแล้วนี่ขอรับ” เจ้านายไม่สนใจคำตอบนั้น เขาตัดสินใจใช้มีดผ่าท้องของเจ้าห่านดู เพื่อหวังว่าจะได้ไข่ทองคำมากมายดังที่เขาและภรรยาคิดไว้ “ไหนไข่ทองคำอยู่ตรงไหนบ้างนะ จะมีกี่ฟองน้า เอามาให้หมดจะได้รวย ๆ” แต่แล้วเขาก็ต้องผิดหวังเมื่อไม่พบไข่ทองคำแม้แต่เพียงฟองเดียว เมื่อหันกลับไปมองเจ้าห่านกตัญญู จึงพบว่า เจ้าห่านตัวนั้น ตัวที่ให้ไข่ทองคำกับเขาได้ตายไปแล้ว และที่สำคัญมันไม่สามารถออกไข่ทองคำให้แก่เขาได้อีกต่อไป ชายเจ้าของห่านได้สติ จึงร้องไห้เสียใจในสิ่งที่เขาได้ทำลงไป “เจ้าห่านเอ๊ย ข้าขอโทษ ข้าผิดไปแล้ว ความโลภความไม่รู้จักพอมันทำให้ข้าขาดสติ เจ้าช่างแสนดีต่อข้า แต่ข้ากลับฆ่าเจ้า ข้าขอโทษ” ต่อจากนี้ไปชายเจ้าของห่านก็จะไม่มีไข่ทองคำอีกแล้ว และเขาก็ไม่มีเจ้าห่านจอมกตัญญูไว้คอยช่วยเหลือครอบครัวเขาอีกต่อไป หลังจากนั้นไม่นานสามีภรรยาคู่นี้ก็กลับมายากจนเหมือนเดิม และในทุกเช้าเขาก็ยังต้องออกไปเก็บไข่ห่านไปขาย แต่มันไม่ใช่ไข่ห่านทองคำอีกต่อไปแล้ว
ข้อคิดเรื่องห่านกับไข่ทองคำ
นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า ความโลภจะนำไปสู่ความหายนะ ดังนั้นเราควรพอใจในสิ่งที่เรามี และอย่าพยายามแสวงหาสิ่งใดที่เกินตัว

Once upon a time, there lived a husband and wife. They were very poor and kept geese in order to sell the eggs. “Geese eggs for sale, fresh eggs, picked daily. Come and buy some”, the husband calls out to customers at the market. However, no one buys any of his eggs today, “I can’t sell any eggs. (sighs) Where will I get the money to buy food? If I go back, I will get scolded again.”
After he returns from the market, his wife discovers that he can’t sell any goose eggs. She screams and yells, “You can’t even sell one egg? Don’t even think about eating dinner today. There is no money left to buy food.” The saddened husband walks back to the goose coop to vent his sorrows. “I don’t know where else to find the money. I collect your eggs, but they don’t sell well. Sometimes I sell some, and sometimes none.” The goose listens to his master’s life with pity and wants to help him earn more money. That night the dutiful goose prays to the angels for blessings, “Dear God, please bless me with eggs that will help make my master richer. I pity him.” The angel hears the goose’s plea and says, “Are you sure that you want your eggs to make money for your master?” The goose is ecstatic that the angel is speaking to him and replies, “I’m sure. I feel sorry for my master. He takes great care of me, but my eggs are of no help to him.” The angel responds to the goose’s request, “Sure, I will turn your eggs into gold!” The goose is delighted and hurriedly thanks the angel. Tomorrow his eggs will finally be able to help his master.
The next morning, the master enters the coop to collect some eggs as usual. However, he notices with surprise that today there is an egg that shines with a dazzlingly golden, yellow glow, “Hey! Why is this egg glowing today? It’s just like gold!” He walks up to it and stoops down to take a closer look. The nearer he is, the more curious he feels. He picks it up to examine it, but to his surprise, it really is a golden egg. He exclaims in a combination of shock and joy, “Hey, this is… it’s... it’s… a golden egg. Real gold. Oh, my goose, how did you lay this golden egg?” The goose grins proudly for having helped his master and replies, “I asked the angel to bless me. The angel gave me a golden egg.” When he hears this, the master is overjoyed. He picks up the goose, and they jump and dance together, shouting, “I’m rich! I will be rich! Thank you, my dear goose.”
From that day onwards, the goose lays a golden egg for his owner each morning. “Well done, my goose and my golden egg.” Eventually, he turns from a poor man to a wealthy millionaire just from selling the golden eggs. His wife stops nagging at him and is eager to pamper him with her cooking. The wife also becomes a wealthy dame with a comfortable life.
One day, the wife becomes greedy and wants to be richer. She wants to have more wealth than what they have, so she says to her husband, “Darling, I suspect that there are many more golden eggs in the goose’s belly. Why do you go through the trouble of collecting the eggs each morning?” The husband thinks and agrees, “Yes. Why do I need to wake up early and wait for the goose to lay one egg? Even the goose said that the angel blessed him with more golden eggs in his belly.” The husband and the wife look at each other slyly. Their greed makes them forget the goose’s blessing.
As soon as he thinks this, the master runs into the kitchen, picks up a large butcher knife, and then runs into the goose’s coop. He walks into the coop with the knife hidden behind his back. The goose is delighted with his master’s visit and walks towards him. Suddenly, the master takes out the knife. When the goose sees the knife, he cries, “My master, what are you doing?” The master, blind with greed, replies, “I want the golden eggs in your stomach.” The goose cries, “I give you a golden egg every morning, sir.” The master ignores his answer and decides to cut open the goose’s stomach in hopes of finding more golden eggs as his wife had predicted. “Where are the golden eggs? How many are there? Give them all to me so I will be rich!” Alas, the master is disappointed because he can’t even find one egg. When he looks back at his dutiful goose, he discovers that the goose is dead and, what’s more, it will never be able to lay another golden egg for him again. The master comes to his senses and weeps for what he has done, “My dear goose, I’m so sorry. I am wrong. My greed has blinded me. You were always so kind to me, but I killed you. I’m sorry.” From that day onwards, the master no longer has any golden eggs or a goose to help support his family. Not long after, the husband and wife become poor again, and every morning they go to collect eggs to sell, but they aren’t golden goose eggs anymore.
