วันหนึ่งขณะที่แม่ไก่สีแดงกำลังคุ้ยเขี่ยหาอาหารอยู่ในฟาร์ม มันก็ได้เจอเมล็ดข้าวสาลีจำนวนหนึ่ง มันร้องเรียกสัตว์ตัวอื่นและถามว่า
“ถ้าเราผลูกเมล็ดข้าวสาลีพวกนี้ เราก็จะมีขนมปังไว้กินกัน (ใครจะช่วยชั้นปลูกข้าวบ้างมั้ย)”
เจ้าเป็ดที่เล่นน้ำอยู่ในสระได้แต่ร้อง ก้าบ ก้าบ แต่กลับส่ายหัวไม่เอาด้วย ที่คอกหมู เจ้าหมูที่คลุกโคลนอยู่ก็บอกไม่เอาด้วย เพราะอยากจะเล่นโคลน ไม่อยากทำงาน ส่วนเจ้าแมวเหมียวที่กำลังเล่นวิ่งไล่จับเงาของตัวเองอยู่ก็ไม่อยากจะช่วยเหลือ เพราะอยากเล่นมากกว่า ทุกตัวปฏิเสธหมด แม่ไก่น้อยสีแดงจึงลงมือปลูกข้าวสาลีนั้นเองตามลำพัง

แม่ไก่น้อยสีแดงแสนขยันลงมือปลูกข้าวสาลีไปร้องเพลงไปอย่างสบายใจ และวันเวลาก็ผ่านไป ต้นข้าวสาลีเจริญงอกงามและออกรวงสีเหลือทองอร่าม ในที่สุดก็ถึงเวลาเก็บเกี่ยว
“(ใครจะช่วยฉันเกี่ยวข้าวบ้างมั้ย)” แม่ไก่น้อยสีแดงร้องถามเพื่อนๆ

เพื่อนๆ ต่างพากันปฏิเสธ บางตัวก็บอกว่าขี้เกียจ บางตัวก็ว่าอยากเล่นมากกว่า แต่ละตัวหนีงานกันหมด แม่ไก่น้อยสีแดงถอนหายใจ แต่ไม่เป็นไร มันจะอดทนเพียรพยายาม จะได้มีขนมปังอร่อยๆ กิน แล้วแม่ไก่ก็ลงมือเกี่ยวข้าวอย่างตั้งใจ

เมื่อได้ข้าวสาลีมา ต่อไปก็จะถึงขั้นตอนโม่แป้งเพื่อทำขนมปัง แม่ไก่อยากให้เพื่อนได้มาร่วมมือร่วมใจกันโม่แป้ง จึงชักชวนเพื่อนอีกครั้ง
แม่ไก่น้อยสีแดงจึงร้องถามว่า
“(ใครจะช่วยฉันโม่แป้งบ้างมั้ย)”
ขณะนั้นเจ้าเป็ดที่ลอยคอเล่นอยู่ในสระ เจ้าหมูที่คลุกโคลนอยู่ตลอดเวลา และเจ้าแมวเหมียวที่เล่นกับเงากลางแดดอยู่ต่างพากันร้องตอบเช่นเดิมว่า
♫ ไม่ต้องหันมามองฉัน ขอยืนยัน ไม่ ไม่ ไม่ ไม่ ไม่ ไม่ ไม่ ไม่ ไม่ ไม่ ไม่ ♫
ดังนั้น แม่ไก่น้อยสีแดงจึงตกลงใจที่จะโม่แป้งเอง สุดท้ายถึงเวลานำขนมปังเข้าเตาอบ แม่ไก่น้อยสีแดงยังคงอยากจะให้เพื่อนๆมาช่วยทำงานอีก จึเดินไปหาเพื่อนๆ และเช่นเคย ยังไม่ทันที่แม่ไก่จะเอ่ยปาก เพื่อนๆก็หันมาบอกว่า
“(ไม่ ไม่ ไม่ ไม่ ไม่)” เพื่อนปฏิเสธเหมือนเดิม แม่ไก่น้อยสีแดงถอนหายใจยาว แล้วก็บอกกลับเพื่อนๆว่า ถ้าอย่างนั้นฉันจะอบขนมปังเอง แม่ไก่น้อยสีแดงบอกและมันก็นำขนมปังเข้าเตาอบ
ในที่สุดแม่ไก่น้อยสีแดงก็ได้ขนมปังห้าแถว กลิ่นหอมน่าอร่อย กลิ่นหอมกรุ่นของขนมปังลอยไปเข้าจมูกของบรรดาเพื่อนๆทั้งหลาย เป็นครั้งแรกที่บรรดาเพื่อนๆให้ความสนใจแม่ไก่น้อยสีแดง เจ้าเป็ดรีบขึ้นจากน้ำแล้วเดินมาใกล้ๆ เจ้าหมูก็ขึ้นมาจากโคลน ส่วนเจ้าแมวเหมียว ก็หยุดเล่นเงา ต่างมามุงดูขนมปังแสนน่ากินนั้น
แม่ไก่สงสัยจึงถามเพื่อนๆว่า
“พวกเธอมาทำไมกันเหรอ”
สัตว์ทุกตัวร้องตอบพร้อมกัน
“พวกเราอยากกินขนมปังบ้างน่ะ”
ตอนที่แม่ไก่ตัวน้อยสีแดงแสนขยันชวนเพื่อนๆ ทั้งเป็ด หมู และแมวมาปลูกข้าวสาลี มาเกี่ยวข้าวสาลี มาโม่แป้งสาลี และมาอบขนมปังนั้น ไม่มีเพื่อนๆแม้สักตัวเดียวที่จะยอมมาช่วยงาน แต่ตอนนี้เมื่องานสำเร็จ ไก้ขนมปังที่แสนน่ากินแล้ว กลับอยากจะกินขึ้นมาด้วย แม่ไก่น้อยสีแดงแม้จะรู้สึกถูกเอาเปรียบแต่ด้วยมิตรภาพและความมีน้ำใจของแม่ไก่น้อยสีแดง มันจึงขอให้เพื่อนๆสัญญาก่อนว่าต่อไปจะช่วยกันทำงานอย่างเต็มใจ เพราะหากช่วยกัน งานก็จะเสร็จเร็ว แล้วก็จะได้กินขนมปังเร็วกว่านี้

The Little Red Hen (นิทานแม่ไก่สีแดง ฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ)
On a farm in America lived many different kinds of animals.

Here, there was a duck who liked to quack loudly.

And a pig who liked to snort loudly.

One day while the red hen was searching the farm for food, she found some wheat grains. She called out to the other animals and asked,
“If we plant these wheat grains, we will have bread to eat. (Who will help me grow the wheat?).”
The duck playing in the pool kept quacking but shook his head. At the pigsty, the pig rolling in the mud also said no, because he wanted to keep playing in the mud and didn't want to work. The cat chasing her shadow also didn't want to help because she wanted to play more. All the animals said no. So, the little red hen planted the wheat by herself.
♫(La-la-la-la-la-la-la, cluck-cluck-cluck-cluck-cluck, la-la.) ♫
The hard-working little red hen planted wheat while singing happily. As time passed, the wheat sprouts grew and turned golden. Finally, harvest time has arrived.
“(Who will help me harvest rice?)” sang the little red hen to her friends.
♫“(No, no, no, no I’m a duck, I saw quack-quack. No, no, no, no, oink-oink. Pigs have to be in the mud. Don’t look at me, I assure you. No, no, m-m-m-m-meow.)”
All my friends refused to help. Some said they were lazy; some wanted to play more. Each of them ran away from work. The little red hen sighed, but that’s okay. She shall persevere so that there will be delicious bread to eat. And so, the hen worked hard to harvest the wheat.

When wheat is harvested, it's time to mill the flour to make bread. The mother hen wanted her friends to come and work together to mill the flour, so she tried persuading her friends again.
So, the little red hen asked,
“(Who will help me mill the flour)”
The duck who was floating in the pool, the pig who was always in the mud, and the cat who was playing with the shadow in the sun, cried out as before,
♫“(Don’t look at me, I assure you. No, no, no, no, no, no.)” ♫
So, the little red hen decided to mill the flour herself. Finally, it was time to put the bread in the oven. The little red hen wanted her friends to help her work again, so she walked over to her friends, and as always, before the hen had even spoken, her friends turned to say
“(No, no, no, no.)” Her friends refused as usual. The little red hen gave a long sigh and told her friends that she would bake the bread herself. Then she put the bread into the oven.
Finally, the little red hen baked five loaves of bread. It smelled delicious.
The aroma of the bread drifted into the nostrils of her friends. For the first time, they became interested in the little red hen. The duck hurriedly got out of the water and walked closer, the pig came up from the mud, and the cat meow stopped playing with her shadows. They all came to look at the delicious bread.
The hen was curious and asked her friends.
“Why did you guys come?”
All the animals replied in unison.
“We want some bread.”
When the hard-working little red hen invited her friends, the duck, pig, and cat, to plant and harvest wheat, mill the flour and bake the bread, not a single one agreed to help. But now that the work was done and the delicious bread was ready, they all wanted a piece of it. The little hen felt taken advantage of, but due to her friendship and kindness, she asked her friends to promise that they would willingly help her in the future, for if they helped each other, the work would be completed quicker, and they would be able to eat the bread even sooner.
After hearing this, her friends felt remorse and promised to help each other in the future. So, the little red hen shared some bread with all her friends for them to eat together.
