แม่น้ำกว้างสายหนึ่งมีน้ำใสไหลเย็น กลางแม่น้ำมีเกาะที่มีต้นไม้ขึ้นมากมาย ดูเขียวไปทั้งเกาะ ต้นไม้เหล่านั้นออกดอกออกผล มีผลไม้หลายชนิด อากาศร่มรื่นเย็นสบาย อีกฝั่งหนึ่งของแม่น้ำเป็นที่อยู่อาศัยของลิงตัวหนึ่ง ร่างกายของมันใหญ่โตแข็งแรงกว่าลิงทั่วไป มันมีแรงมาก กระโดดได้ไกลและวิ่งได้รวดเร็วมาก มันชอบกินผลไม้เป็นอาหาร จึงไปที่เกาะนี้ทุกวันเพื่อเลือกกินผลไม้ของโปรด
ลิงข้ามแม่น้ำไปที่เกาะกลางน้ำได้ โดยการกระโดดข้ามไปที่ก้อนหินใหญ่ก้อนหนึ่ง ซึ่งโผล่พ้นน้ำและอยู่ตรงกลางระหว่างชายฝั่งน้ำกับเกาะ แล้วกระโดดไกลอีกทีหนึ่งก็ข้ามน้ำไปที่เกาะได้เลย เพราะความแข็งแรงว่องไวของมัน มันกระโดดข้ามไปที่เกาะตั้งแต่เช้า สนุกสนานและเพลิดเพลินอยู่กับการกินและการเที่ยวเล่นบนเกาะ พอตกเย็นก็ข้ามกลับมายังที่พักอีกฝั่งหนึ่ง
ในแม่น้ำสายนี้มีจระเข้สองตัวผัวเมียอาศัยอยู่ ตัวผู้มีหน้าที่หาอาหารมาให้เมียกิน ก็คือสัตว์น้ำที่อาศัยอยู่ในแม่น้ำนั้น เพราะเมียของมันกำลังตั้งท้อง ไปหากินเองไม่สะดวก อยู่มาวันหนึ่งเมียไม่อยากกินอาหารที่หามาได้ จระเข้ตัวผู้จึงถามว่า “น้องเป็นอะไรจ๊ะ ไม่ยอมกินอาหารที่พี่หามาให้” จระเข้ที่เป็นเมีย ถอนหายใจเฮือก หน้าเศร้า ทำเสียงออดอ้อน “เฮ้อ พี่จ๋า ฉันไม่นึกอยากกินของพวกนี้เลย เบื่อจิงจิ๊ง” สามีผู้อยากเอาใจจึงถามต่อว่า “อ้าว แล้วน้องอยากกินอะไรเหรอ พี่จะได้หามาให้” เมียแสนดีใจรีบตอบไปทันทีว่า “พี่จ๋า ฉันแพ้ท้อง อยากกินหัวใจลิงจริง ๆ จ้ะพี่ มันคือเจ้าลิงตัวใหญ่ที่แข็งแรงและมีพลังมาก ไอ้ตัวที่กระโดดข้ามไปมาที่แม่น้ำนี้ทุกวัน หากได้กินสมอยากคงชื่นใจ และลูกน้อยของเราก็คงแข็งแรงนะพี่นะ” จระเข้เมียพูดแล้วก็ทำเสียงสะอื้นขอความเห็นใจ จระเข้ผัวจึงตอบไปว่า “จ้ะน้องรัก เพื่อลูกของเรา และเพื่อน้อง พี่จะเอาหัวใจเจ้าลิงตัวนั้นมาให้น้องกินให้ได้ อย่าร้องไห้นะจ๊ะ”
จากนั้นจระเข้ตัวผู้ก็แอบมองลิงทรงพลังทุกวัน คิดหนักว่าจะจัดการกับเจ้าลิงตัวนี้ได้อย่างไร เนื่องจากลิงตัวใหญ่ ว่องไว และแข็งแรงมาก แต่ด้วยความอยากเอาใจเมีย ในที่สุดก็คิดแผนการได้
เช้าวันนั้นลิงกระโดดจากฝั่งน้ำไปที่ก้อนหินใหญ่ และจากก้อนหินใหญ่กระโดดอีกทีหนึ่งก็ถึงเกาะ เมื่อจระเข้ตัวผู้เห็นลิงกระโดดข้ามแม่น้ำไปแล้ว จึงว่ายน้ำจากที่ซ่อนไปนอนเกยนิ่งอยู่บนก้อนหิน มันนอนนิ่งไม่กระดุกกระดิกเลย ทำเหมือนเป็นก้อนหินใหญ่ที่ลิงเคยกระโดดมา รอคอยตั้งแต่เช้าจนเย็น จนในที่สุดเวลาเย็นก็มาถึง
ลิงเดินออกมาจากเกาะอย่างมีความสุข เพราะกินผลไม้มาอิ่มเต็มพุงแล้ว เมื่อเดินมาถึงฝั่งน้ำ ลิงตัวนี้ซึ่งมีนิสัยชอบสังเกตสิ่งต่าง ๆ รอบตัว จึงมองเห็นว่าที่ก้อนหินที่เคยกระโดดไปมาเป็นประจำ เป็นก้อนใหญ่สูงกว่าทุก ๆ วัน เมื่อจ้องดูนาน ๆ ลิงพูดกับตัวเองด้วยความสงสัยว่า “เอ๊ะ นั่นคงไม่ใช่ก้อนหินธรรมดาแล้ว ต้องมีสิ่งผิดปกติเกิดขึ้นแน่ ๆ” ลิงเจ้าปัญญาจึงออกอุบายทดสอบ โดยร้องทักก้อนหินว่า “ก้อนหินจ๋า เป็นไงบ้าง วันนี้คอยนานไหม” เงียบ ไม่มีเสียงตอบ ลิงจึงร้องเรียกออกไปเป็นครั้งที่สอง เงียบ ไม่มีเสียงตอบอีกเช่นกัน ลิงจึงเปลี่ยนคำพูดใหม่ “ก้อนหินจ๋า สามครั้งแล้วนะที่เรียกไป ทำไมไม่ตอบ โกรธเรื่องอะไร บอกมาได้เลย”
จระเข้นิ่งฟังอยู่นาน คิดสงสัยว่าทำไมก้อนหินก้อนนี้พูดได้ ทั้งลิงและก้อนหินคงร้องทักทายกันทุกวันในตอนเย็นเมื่อลิงกลับจากเกาะ หากมันยังนิ่งเฉยอยู่ ลิงคงรู้ตัวแน่ ๆ ฉะนั้นมันควรต้องร้องตอบออกไป “ลิงเอ๊ย ข้ารออยู่ รีบข้ามกลับมาเร็ว ๆ” จระเข้คิดว่าเมื่อลิงกระโดดข้ามน้ำมาที่ตัวมัน มันจะงับกัดทันที แล้วลากลงน้ำเอาไปให้เมียกินได้อย่างง่ายดาย
ฝั่งเจ้าลิง ตอนนี้รู้แล้วว่ามีจระเข้นอนรออยู่ที่ก้อนหินแน่ ๆ เพราะสัตว์ทุกตัวรู้ว่ามีจระเข้อยู่ในน้ำ หากเผลอเมื่อไหร่เป็นโดนงาบลากเอาไปกิน ลิงถามตัวเองว่า “เราจะทำยังไงดีนะ เพราะถ้าจะข้ามไปฝั่งโน้นได้ ก็ต้องข้ามก้อนหินไปเท่านั้น แล้วไอ้เข้ก็นอนขวางอยู่แบบนี้ เห็นทีจะรอดยาก”
เมื่อไม่มีทางเลือก จึงต้องหาทางรอดให้ได้ด้วยปัญญา ลิงร้องถามออกไปว่า “นั่นคือจระเข้ใช่มั้ย” จระเข้รู้ตัวแล้วว่าเสียรู้เจ้าลิง จึงต้องยอมรับความจริง “ใช่ ข้าคือจระเข้ เจ้าของแม่น้ำนี้ เมียข้าแพ้ท้อง อยากกินหัวใจลิง ข้าจึงมารอเจ้าอยู่ที่นี่ รีบข้ามมาเร็ว ๆ ยอมให้ข้าจับซะดี ๆ ” ลิงคิดแล้วจึงตอบไปว่า “เอาละ ในเมื่อหนีไม่พ้น ข้าก็จะยอมให้เจ้ากินแต่โดยดี เจ้าอ้าปากรอได้เลย จะได้งาบข้าได้ง่าย ๆ” ความจริงแล้ว เจ้าลิงรู้ว่า ธรรมชาติของจระเข้ ถ้ามันอ้าปาก ดวงตาของมันจะปิดไปเอง และมันจะมองไม่เห็นสิ่งใด แต่ว่าจระเข้เองลืมคิดในเรื่องนี้ เมื่อไม่รู้ทันในกลอุบายของลิง มันจึงนอนอ้าปากรอ
ทันใดนั้นเอง เจ้าลิงแสนฉลาดกระโดดอย่างว่องไว ข้ามน้ำเหยียบหัวจระเข้แทนก้อนหิน แล้วกระโดดข้ามไปอีกฝั่งหนึ่งโดยง่ายดายและรวดเร็วมาก
จระเข้ลืมตามาอีกที ก็เห็นว่าเจ้าลิงหนีขึ้นฝั่งไปแล้ว มันได้ยินเสียงหัวเราะดังลั่นของลิงจากฝั่งน้ำ และเสียงพูดตามมาว่า “ฮ่า ฮ่า ฮ่า มีปัญญาอยู่กับตัวกลัวอะไร ข้าชอบสังเกตสิ่งต่าง ๆ รอบตัว เจ้าหลอกข้าไม่ได้หรอก”
จระเข้ตัวผู้รีบมุดลงน้ำด้วยความอับอาย เนื่องจากโดนลิงหลอก มันรีบกลับไปหาเมีย เล่าเรื่องให้ฟัง พร้อมกับบอกว่า “ลิงตัวนี้ฉลาด มีสติปัญญา แม้เมื่อมีภัยอันตรายมาใกล้ตัว ก็ยังเอาตัวรอดได้” ฝ่ายเมียเห็นด้วยจึงตอบว่า “จริงจ้ะพี่จ๋า งั้นเราไม่ต้องไปยุ่งกับลิงตัวนั้นอีกนะ น้องจะกินอาหารอย่างที่เคยกินจ้ะ” จากนั้นเป็นต้นมา จระเข้สองผัวเมียก็ไม่เคยรบกวนหรือคิดร้ายกับลิงตัวนั้นอีกเลย
The Monkey and the Crocodile (นิทานลิงหลอกจระเข้ ฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ)
There is a broad river with clear, cool water. In the middle of this river is an island with many trees, making it lush with greenery. The trees bear many types of fruits, and they make the island nice and shady. On the other side of the river is a monkey’s home. His body is bigger and stronger than a normal monkey's. He has a lot of strength and can jump far and run fast. He likes to eat fruits as food, so he goes to the island every day to choose his favorite fruits.
The monkey can cross the river to get to the island by jumping on a large rock that emerges from the water, which is in between the shore and the island. Then he can jump one more time to reach the island. Because he is strong and fast, the monkey has jumped to the island since the early morning. He’s been eating, playing, and strolling on the island. When evening arrives, he jumps back to the other side of the river to rest. In this river live two crocodiles. A husband and a wife. The male crocodile is responsible for finding food for his wife because she is pregnant and cannot find food for herself. One day, the wife does not want to eat the food that her husband has brought, so the male crocodile asks, “What is wrong, darling? Why won’t you eat the food that I’ve brought you?” The wife sighs with a sad face and whines, “Hmm… darling, I don’t want to eat any of this food. I’m bored of it.” The consoling husband asks, “Oh, then what would you like to eat? I can find it for you.” The delighted wife hurriedly answers, “Darling, I have morning sickness. I crave the heart of a monkey. It’s the monkey that is big and strong. The one that jumps across this river each day. Eating its heart would satisfy me greatly, and our baby would be strong, too”, says the female crocodile sobbing for sympathy. The husband answers, “Yes, my dear. For our child and for you, I will bring the monkey’s heart for you to eat. Please don’t cry.”
After that, the male crocodile spies on the powerful monkey every day and thinks hard about how he can overcome the monkey since it is very big, fast, and strong. But with a strong desire to please his wife, he finally comes up with a plan.
One morning, the monkey jumps from his shore to the large rock and jumps one more time to the island. When the male crocodile sees the monkey jump across the river, he swims to the big rock and lays still on it. He camouflages into the same rock that the monkey normally jumps on and waits for him from dawn until dusk. Finally, evening arrives, and the monkey walks out of the island happily after having stuffed his belly with fruits. When he walks to the shore, this monkey, who has a habit of observing things around him, sees that the rock that he usually jumps on is higher than normal. When he stares at it longer, he says to himself curiously, “Eh. That’s not an ordinary rock anymore. There must be something wrong with it.” The clever monkey set out to test it by shouting to the rock, “My dear rock, how are you today? Have you been waiting for me long?” Silence, no answer. The monkey calls out a second time, and once again, there is silence. So, the monkey changes his wording, “Darling rock, it’s been three times; why haven’t you replied? Are you mad about something? You can tell me.”
The crocodile listens for a long time and wonders why this rock can speak. The monkey and the rock must greet each other every evening when the monkey comes back from the island. If he lays still, the monkey will find out the truth. Hence, he should answer, “Monkey, I’m waiting for you. Hurry up and come back.” The crocodile thinks that once the monkey jumps onto him, he will bite it and easily drag it down the water as food for his wife.
As for the monkey, now he knows there must be a crocodile lying waiting on the rock because every animal knows there are crocodiles in the river. If you’re not careful, they can snatch you as food. The monkey asks himself, “What should I do? I can only jump on this rock if I want to cross to the other side. With the crocodile blocking my path, it’s going to be difficult to survive.”
When there is no other way, the monkey has to use his intelligence to survive. The monkey calls out, “Is that a crocodile?”. The crocodile is now aware that the monkey knows, so he admits the truth, “Yes. I am a crocodile. The owner of this river. My wife has morning sickness and wants to eat a monkey’s heart, so I am waiting for you here. Hurry up and cross the river. Let me catch you this instant.” The monkey thinks and replies, “Okay. Since I won’t be able to escape, I will let you eat me. Just open your mouth wide so you can easily catch me.” In truth, the monkey knows that if a crocodile opens its mouth, its eyes will close, and it will not see a thing. However, the crocodile forgets about this and is unaware of the monkey’s trick. He opens his mouth wide and waits. All of a sudden, the clever monkey swiftly jumps over the rock by stepping on the crocodile’s head and easily jumps over to the other side.
The crocodile opens its eyes and sees that the monkey has crossed over. He hears its laughter from the other side and his voice saying, “Hahaha. What will you fear if you have intelligence? I like to observe things around me. You will never be able to fool me.”
The male crocodile hurriedly dives back down into the water in shame from the monkey’s trickery. He rushes back to his wife and tells her the story while saying, “This monkey is clever and wise. Even when there is danger, he is still able to survive.” The wife agrees and replies, “That’s true, darling. Then we should leave him alone. I will eat the same food that you brought me before.” And from then on, the two crocodiles never bother or think badly about this monkey ever again.
