ณ หมู่บ้านเล็ก ๆ กลางหุบเขาแห่งหนึ่ง มีสมาชิกในหมู่บ้านไม่กี่ครอบครัว อาชีพหลักของพวกเขาคือการออกไปหาของป่าและล่าสัตว์ในตอนกลางคืน ซึ่งเป็นหน้าที่ของผู้ชายที่เป็นหัวหน้าครอบครัว ส่วนพวกผู้หญิงที่เป็นภรรยารับหน้าที่นำของป่าที่สามีหามาได้ไปขายในตลาดที่หมู่บ้านข้าง ๆ โดยออกไปขายของแค่อาทิตย์ละหนึ่งวันหรือสองวันเท่านั้น เพราะชาวบ้านในหมู่บ้านนี้เป็นคนขี้เกียจและโง่เขลา “วันนี้พ่อหากบ หาเขียดมาได้แค่นี้เองนะ พอขายได้มั้ย” สามีผู้เป็นหัวหน้าครอบครัวกล่าวขึ้น ภรรยาก้มนับจำนวนกบเขียดแล้วยิ้มหวาน “โอ๊ย ได้แค่นี้ก็ดีแล้ว ฉันจะได้นั่งขายไม่นาน ขายหมดแล้วจะได้รีบกลับมานอน ขี้เกียจตื่นเช้า” ความคิดและการใช้ชีวิตแบบนี้ไม่ได้เกิดแค่ครอบครัวนี้เท่านั้น ทุกครอบครัวในหมู่บ้านนี้คิดและใช้ชีวิตแบบเดียวกัน
อยู่มาวันหนึ่งเป็นคืนวันเพ็ญที่พระจันทร์เต็มดวง ปกติภรรยาจะนอนหลับอยู่ในบ้าน แต่วันนี้นางรู้สึกร้อนอบอ้าวเป็นพิเศษจึงคิดจะอาบน้ำคลายร้อน แต่พบว่าน้ำในตุ่มหมดเกลี้ยง ฝ่ายสามีกำลังเตรียมตัวออกไปหาของป่าพร้อมกับชาวบ้านคนอื่น ๆ นางจึงต้องออกมาตักน้ำที่บ่อน้ำท้ายหมู่บ้านด้วยตัวเองและแล้วเมื่อนางชะโงกมองลงไปในบ่อน้ำ ก็เห็นพระจันทร์ดวงใหญ่อยู่ในนั้น จึงทิ้งถังน้ำลงพื้นด้วยความตกใจ แล้ววิ่งกลับไปในหมู่บ้านพร้อมกับร้องตะโกนโหวกเหวกจนชาวบ้านแตกตื่นออกมากันเต็มไปหมด รวมถึงสามีของนางที่กำลังเตรียมของใช้ออกไปทำงาน
“เกิดเรื่องใหญ่แล้วพวกเรา เกิดเรื่องใหญ่แล้วเจ้าข้าเอ๊ย” สามีตกใจมากจึงรีบถามภรรยาว่า “เกิดอะไรขึ้น ทำไมต้องตกอกตกใจอะไรขนาดนั้น” ภรรยายืนหายใจเหนื่อยหอบตอบกลับว่า “ฉันเห็นพระจันทร์ตกลงไปในบ่อน้ำท้ายหมู่บ้านของเรา” สามีได้ยินดังนั้นจึงตกใจตาม พร้อมตะโกนขึ้นว่า “พวกเราพระจันทร์ตกน้ำไปแล้ว เราจะต้องร่วมมือกันช่วยเอาพระจันทร์ขึ้นมาให้ได้ ไม่อย่างนั้นหมู่บ้านเราจะไม่มีพระจันทร์ใช้อีกต่อไป” ชาวบ้านทุกคนต่างตกใจร้องเอะอะโวยวาย หญิงชราคนหนึ่งร้องขึ้นว่า “ตายแล้ว ตั้งแต่เกิดมาข้ายังไม่เคยเจอเรื่องแบบนี้เลย น่ากลัวจัง” ชายหนุ่มอีกคนตกใจไม่แพ้กัน รีบบอกทุกคนว่า “ใครมีเครื่องไม้เครื่องมืออะไรก็ไปขนเอามา แล้วไปเจอกันที่บ่อน้ำท้ายหมู่บ้าน”
ทุกคนต่างรีบแยกย้ายเข้าบ้านไปเตรียมอุปกรณ์เท่าที่ตนคิดว่าจะช่วยพระจันทร์ได้ ฝ่ายผู้ชายคว้าจอบเสียม พร้าไม้แหลมยาว ๆ ฝ่ายผู้หญิงรวบรวมได้ไม้กวาด ตะกร้าใส่ของ กระป๋อง กะละมังแล้วพากันไปตามที่นัดหมาย พวกเขาต่างช่วยกันคิดและทดลองหลายต่อหลายวิธีที่จะนำพระจันทร์ขึ้นมา แต่ทำจนหมดแรงก็ไม่สำเร็จสักที
ขณะเดียวกันนั้น ได้มีพ่อค้าเดินทางไกลผ่านมายังหมู่บ้าน เห็นบ่อน้ำขนาดใหญ่ที่รายล้อมไปด้วยชาวบ้านพร้อมอุปกรณ์เต็มไม้เต็มมือ กำลังส่งเสียงเอะอะและดูสับสนวุ่นวายไปหมด เขาสงสัยว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้น จึงเดินเข้าไปถามชาวบ้านคนหนึ่งว่า “ขอโทษนะ พวกท่านกำลังทำอะไรกันอยู่หรือ” ชาวบ้านได้หันมาตอบว่า “เกิดเหตุร้ายกับหมู่บ้านข้า พระจันทร์ได้ตกลงไปในบ่อน้ำนี้ พวกข้าจึงพยายามหาทางช่วยพระจันทร์ขึ้นมาอีกครั้ง”
เมื่อได้ยินดังนั้น พ่อค้าจึงก้มมองลงไปที่บ่อแล้วหัวเราะลั่น “ฮ่า.. ฮ่า.. ฮ่า.. หยุดก่อน ๆ ที่อยู่ในบ่อน้ำของพวกท่านมันไม่ใช่พระจันทร์หรอกนะ มันเป็นเพียงเงาที่สะท้อนลงมาของพระจันทร์ที่อยู่บนท้องฟ้าเท่านั้น พวกท่านไม่น่ามาเสียเวลากับเรื่องอย่างนี้เลย เอาเวลาไปทำประโยชน์อื่นดีกว่า” หญิงคนหนึ่งตอบพ่อค้าว่า “ตอนนี้อะไรจะมีประโยชน์ไปกว่าการช่วยพระจันทร์” พ่อค้าจึงรีบตอบว่า “มิสิ ข้าได้ข่าวมาว่าที่นี่มีของป่าที่น่าสนใจมากมาย ข้าเลยเดินทางมาขอซื้อด้วยตัวเอง นี่ข้าเอาเงิน เอาของใช้ต่าง ๆ มากมายมาแลกกับของป่าของพวกท่าน เห็นมั้ยได้เงินทองได้ประโยชน์กว่าด้วย”
เมื่อได้ยินดังนั้น แทนที่ชาวบ้านจะคิดได้ กลับยิ่งโกรธพ่อค้า “เจ้ามันคนโกหก เห็นแก่ประโยชน์ตัวเอง ไม่มีน้ำใจ” ชายคนหนึ่งกล่าวขึ้น หลังจากนั้นก็ตามมาด้วยเสียงต่อว่าของชาวบ้านคนอื่น ๆ “เจ้าออกไปจากหมู่บ้านข้าเลยนะ ข้าไม่มีอะไรขายให้เจ้าทั้งนั้น ออกไป” หญิงแก่เอ่ยปากไล่พ่อค้า พ่อค้าพยายามอธิบายว่า “ข้าไม่ได้โกหกนะ นั่นมันไม่ใช่พระจันทร์จริง ๆ นี่ไง พวกท่านลองมองขึ้นไปบนฟ้าสิ เห็นมั้ย พระจันทร์จริง ๆ ยังอยู่บนนั้น”
ชาวบ้านแหงนมองพระจันทร์บนฟ้า ก็พบว่าพระจันทร์ยังอยู่บนฟ้าจริงๆ แต่พวกเขายังไม่เชื่อพ่อค้าอยู่ดี “นั่นมันคนละดวงกัน ดวงนั้นมันอยู่บนฟ้า แต่ดวงนี้มันตกน้ำไปแล้ว เจ้าไม่คิดจะช่วยก็จงออกไปให้พ้นจากหมู่บ้านข้าเดี๋ยวนี้” ชายอีกคนไล่เขาอีกครั้ง จากนั้นจึงตามมาด้วยเสียงขับไล่ของชาวบ้านทุกคน “ออกไป” “ออกไปเดี๋ยวนี้นะ” “ออกไปให้พ้นจากหมู่บ้านข้า ออกไป” “ไปให้พ้นเดี๋ยวนี้นะ ไอ้คนขี้โกหกหลอกลวง” และไม่ใช่แค่เสียงขับไล่เท่านั้น ชาวบ้านยังไล่ตี เอาของขว้างปาพ่อค้า ตอนนี้พ่อค้ารู้แล้วว่า เขาคงไม่สามารถช่วยทำให้คนในหมู่บ้านนี้เข้าใจความจริงในเรื่องของพระจันทร์ได้ จึงรีบวิ่งหนีออกจากหมู่บ้านนี้ไป พลางคิดในใจว่า “เฮ่อ คนบางคนช่างโง่เขลาเกินกว่าจะสอนได้ เราอย่าไปเสียเวลากับคนพวกนี้เลย ไร้ประโยชน์เปล่า ๆ”
เมื่อพ่อค้าหนีไปแล้ว ชาวบ้านก็กลับมาหาทางช่วยพระจันทร์ขึ้นจากบ่อน้ำต่อไปจนถึงรุ่งเช้า จึงได้พบความจริงว่า พระจันทร์ในบ่อน้ำได้หายไปแล้ว พร้อมการหายไปของพระจันทร์บนท้องฟ้า เพราะถึงเวลาของพระอาทิตย์ขึ้น ชาวบ้านคนหนึ่งจึงเอ่ยขึ้นว่า “พวกเราหยุดเถอะ พวกเราคงช่วยพระจันทร์เอาไว้ไม่ได้ บัดนี้พระจันทร์ได้จมลึกลงไปในบ่อแล้ว” หญิงอีกคนจึงพูดขึ้นว่า “ลาก่อนนะพระจันทร์” และทุกคนจึงพากันกลับเข้าบ้านไปนอน โดยหมดโอกาสที่จะได้เงินทองและของใช้ต่าง ๆ จากพ่อค้าที่อุตส่าห์เดินทางมาทำมาค้าขายด้วยถึงหมู่บ้านของพวกเขาเอง
ส่วนพ่อค้าเมื่อได้หนีออกจากหมู่บ้านนี้ไปแล้ว เขาได้เดินทางต่อเพื่อไปหาซื้อของป่าจากอีกหมู่บ้านหนึ่ง ทำให้ชาวบ้านในหมู่บ้านนั้นมีเงินทองใช้ มีรายได้และไม่ลำบากยากจนเหมือนเช่นหมู่บ้านนี้ที่คนในหมู่บ้านโง่เขลาเบาปัญญาเกินกว่าจะยอมรับความคิดและคำสอนของคนอื่น
The Moon in the Well (นิทานพระจันทร์ในบ่อน้ำ ฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ)
In a small village in the middle of a mountain lived a few families. Their main occupation is to forage in the forest and hunt at night, which is the responsibility of the man, who is the head of the family. The women and wives are responsible for selling scavenged forest goods at a nearby village's market only once or twice a week because the villagers in this village are lazy and foolish. “These are all the frogs I could find today. Do you think you can sell this?” says the husband, the head of his household. The wife bends down to counter the number of frogs and smiles sweetly, “Oh, this is good enough. I don’t want to spend all day selling. Once they are all sold out, I will hurry back to sleep. I’m too lazy to wake up early.” This kind of thinking is not only born in this family. Every family in this village thinks and lives the same way.
One day, it is a full moon. Normally, the wife would be sleeping at home. However, she feels especially hot and prickly today, so she decides to take a shower to relieve the heat. However, she discovers that all the water in the well has vanished. Her husband is hunting in the forest with the other villagers, so she has to fetch some water by herself. When she looks down into the well, she sees a large moon. She drops the water bucket on the ground in shock and runs back to the village, shouting. All the villagers panicked and came to see what the fuss was all about, including her husband preparing his hunting gear. “Something big has happened. Oh God, something major has happened.” The husband is startled and quickly replies, “What happened? Why are you so shocked?” The wife stands, gasping for breath, “I saw the moon fall into the well at the back of our village.” After hearing this, the husband also panics and yells, “Everyone! The moon has fallen into the water. We must work together to bring the moon back up, or our village will no longer have a moon.” All the villagers are stunned and cry in frustration. An old lady cries, “Oh, no. I have never encountered such a thing since I was born. How terrifying!” Another young man is equally shocked and hurriedly tells everyone, “Whoever has tools and supplies, go and bring them. Let’s meet at the well at the back of the village.”
Everyone hurriedly disperses into their home to prepare tools that they believe can help save the moon. The men grab spades, which are long, pointed sticks. The women grab brooms, baskets, cans, and pails and gather at the meeting point. Together they think of and try many different ways to bring the moon up until they are exhausted, but their efforts have not been successful.
Meanwhile, merchants are traveling long distances to the village. They see a large well surrounded by villagers and their gears making loud and chaotic noises. They wonder what has happened and walk over to one of the villagers to ask, “Excuse me. What are you folks doing?” The villager turns to answer, “Something bad has happened to my village. The moon has fallen into this well, so we are trying to bring the moon back up again.” When he hears this, the merchant looks down into the well and laughs uproariously, “Ha Ha Ha. Stop. The moon in your well is not the real moon but a mere reflection of the moon in the sky. You shouldn’t waste your valuable time on things like this. Why don’t you spend it on more useful things?” A woman answers, “What else is more useful than helping the moon?” The merchant quickly replies, “Of course there is. I’ve heard that there are many interesting forests finds here. So, I’ve journeyed here to buy them for myself. I’ve brought a lot of money and different goods to trade for your forest goods. Don’t you see? Making money is more useful.” Upon hearing this, the villagers get angry at the merchant instead of coming to a realization. “You are a liar and selfish. You have no generosity”, says a man, followed by the scornful scolding of other villagers. “Leave our village this instant. We don’t have anything to sell to you. Leave now!” says the old woman dismissing the merchant. The merchant tries to explain, “I’m not lying. That is truly not the real moon. Here, why don’t you look up into the sky? See? The real moon is still up there.” The villagers glance up at the moon in the sky and discover that it truly is still there. However, they still refuse to listen to the merchant, “That’s a different moon. That moon is in the sky, but this one has fallen into the well. If you don’t want to help us, then you must leave this instant”, another man chases him out, followed by the other villagers’ cries, “Get out!”, “Leave right now!”, “Get out of my village. Go away!”, “Leave right now, you liar!” And it wasn’t just the sound of their voices chasing him out, but they were also hitting him and throwing things at him. At this moment, the merchant realizes that he probably won’t be able to make the villagers see the truth about the moon, so he hurriedly runs away from the village. He thinks to himself, “Huh… Some people are too foolish to be taught. Let’s not waste time with these people. How useless.”
After the merchant flees, the villagers spend the rest of the night until dawn, finding a way to bring the moon out of the well. In the morning, they discover the truth that the moon has disappeared from the well and the sky because the sun has risen. One villager says, “Guys, let’s stop. We can’t save the moon. It has already sunk to the bottom of the well.” Another woman says, “Goodbye, moon.” And everyone goes back to their house to sleep without the opportunity to get money and other items from the merchant who came to make and trade with them in their village.
Once the merchant has fled this village, he journeys to another village to buy goods, giving these villagers a chance to make money and earn a living. They don’t have to suffer like the villagers in the previous village who are too foolish to accept other people’s ideas and teachings.
