ณ ดินแดนอันไกลโพ้นของประเทศฟินแลนด์ ไกลออกไปทางตอนเหนือ ที่แห่งนั้นมีพระราชาผู้ปกครองดินแดน พระองค์มีพระธิดาองค์หนึ่งชื่อ เจ้าหญิงเวนด์ลา ผู้ฉลาดปราดเปรื่อง และรอบรู้ภาษาทุกภาษาที่ทุกคนใช้สื่อสารกันบนโลกนี้

เจ้าหญิงเวนด์ลาร้องเพลงอย่างมีความสุข พระราชาเองก็ภาคภูมิใจกับเจ้าหญิงเวนด์ลามาก และคิดเสมอว่า ไม่มีใครที่จะสามารถเอาชนะความฉลาดของพระธิดาได้ พระราชาป่าวประกาศออกไปว่า หากชายหนุ่มคนไหนสามารถพูดภาษาที่เจ้าหญิงไม่รู้ความหมายได้ จะยกเจ้าหญิงเวนด์ลาให้ แต่หากมาแล้วไม่สามารถเอาชนะเจ้าหญิงเวนด์ลาได้จะต้องถูกลงโทษ
ชายหนุ่มหลายคนเมื่อเห็นความงามของเจ้าหญิงเวนด์ลาก็ต่างพากันหลงใหล และไม่มีใครคิดว่าตัวเองจะด้อยกว่าเจ้าหญิง จึงพากันรับคำท้าของพระราชา
ชายหนุ่มทั้งรวยทั้งจนพากันเข้ามาสมัครมากมาย บางคนก็ขนทองคำใส่เกวียนมาด้วย เพื่อจะได้สู่ขอเลยเมื่อชนะเจ้าหญิงได้ ชายหนุ่มต่างก็ทยอยเข้าเฝ้าเจ้าหญิง ผ่านไปหนึ่งคน สองคน สามคน สี่คน ห้าคน จนกระทั่งหนึ่งร้อยคน ก็ไม่มีใครเอาชนะเจ้าหญิงเวนด์ลาได้เลย ชายหนุ่มทั้งหลายเลยต้องถูกลงโทษด้วยวิธีการหลายแบบ ทั้งถูกจับขังในถ้ำอันเหม็นอับ ถูฏจับโยนลงทะเลท่คลื่นแรงและเย็นเฉียบ ถูกเนรเทศออกนอกเมืองไปอยู่ในที่ทุรกันดาร ขาดแคลนน้ำ และวิธีการลงโทษอีกมากมาย
เมื่อข่าวนี้่แพร่สะพัดออกไปจึงไม่มีชายหนุ่มคนใดที่จะมารับคำท้าของพระราชาอีกเลย เจ้าหญิงที่สนุกกับการเอาชนะในตอนแรกก็เริ่มเหงาและรู้สึกโดดเดี่ยว
“แย่จังเลย นี่น่ะเหรอโชคชะตาของฉัน”

อีกฟากของเมืองไกลออกไป ยังมีชายหนุ่มคนเลี้ยงแกะผู้ยากจนแต่เป็นคนจิตใจดี ที่สำคัญเขาสามารถพูดคุยและรู้ภาษาของสัตว์ เขามีชื่อว่าทิโม่

วันหนึ่งทิโม่อยากเข้าไปผจญภัยในเมืองที่ซึ่งเขาไม่เคยไป เขาจึงออกเดินทางจากหมู่บ้านทันที ระหว่างทางเขาได้ยินเสียงนกร้องจิ๊บๆ ด้วยความเจ็บปวดอยู่ข้างทาง ทิโม่เข้าใจภาษาสัตว์อยู่แล้วจึงรู้ว่านี่ไใม่ใช่เสียงร้องที่ปกติ เมื่อเขาเดินตามเสียไป ก็ได้พบนกกระจอกปักหักตัวหนึ่ง ทิโม่ได้พูดคุยกับเจ้านกน้อย เพื่อไม่ให้มันตกใจ นกกระจอกจึงให้ทิโฒ่ช่วยทำแผลให้ เมื่อเสร็จเรียบร้อยทิโม่ก็เกรงว่าหากปล่อยไว้นกตัวนี้อาจจะเป็เหยื่อของสัตว์ตัวอื่น ทิโม่จึงบอกนกกระจอกว่าให้เข้าไปอาศัยอยู่ในถุงย่ามของเขาก่อน เมื่อนกน้อยแข็งแรงแล้วจึงค่อยไป นกน้อยยอมให้ทิโม่เอามันเข้าไปไว้ในถุงย่ามเพื่อความปลอดภัย
เดินไปได้สักพัก ทิโมก็ได้ยินเสียงกระรอกร้องให้ช่วย
(เสียงกระรอก)
“ช่วยด้วยๆ ขาข้าติดกับดักอ่ะ”
ทิโม่จึงช่วยกระรอกออกจากกับดักแล้วทำแผลให้มัน ด้วยจิตใจที่มีเมตตา ทิโม่บอกกับกระรอกว่า ขอให้กระรอกมาอยู่ในถุงย่ามก่อน เมื่อหายแล้วค่อยไป กระรอกยอมให้ทิโม่จับมันใส่ถุงรวมกับนกกระจอก เพื่อให้มันได้พักจนกว่าขาจะหาย
เดินทางไปได้อีกไม่นาน เขาก็ได้ยินเสียงร้อง กา กา กา
ทิโม่จึงร้องถามว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้น กาบอกว่าคู่ของมันหายไป ไม่รู้ว่าคนในเมืองจับไปหรือไม่ ทิโม่จึงชวนกาเข้าเมืองด้วยกัน การู้สึกอุ่นใจที่มีคนพูดภาษาของมันรู้เรื่องเดินทางไปด้วย แต่ด้วยความเหน็ดเหนื่อยจากการบินตามหาคู่ของมันมาทั้งวัน กาจึงขอเข้าไปอยู่ในถุงย่ามด้วย และทั้งหมดก็เดินทางต่อไป
เมื่อมาถึงในเมือง เขาลงนั่งพักดื่มน้ำและป้อนน้ำให้นก กระรอก และกา ระหว่างที่นั่งอยู่นั้น ทิโม่ได้ยินชาวเมืองพูดถึงคำท้าทายชายหนุ่มของพระราชา บรรดาสัตว์สามตัวในถุงย่ามต่างก็อยากให้ทิโม่ผู้ใจดีของพวกมัน ได้มีชีวิตที่ดีขึ้น พวกมันบอกให้ทิโฒ่ลองไปทดสอบดู ทิโม่จึงเดินทางไปพระราชวัง
ที่หน้าวังอันใหญ่โตและสวยงาม ทหารที่เฝ้าประตูวังพาทิโม่ไปเข้าเฝ้าพระราชา เมื่อพระราชาเห็นทิโฒ่ก็ทรงขบขันที่หนุ่มเลี้ยงแกะอย่างเขาจนมารับคำท้าเรื่องภาษาที่เจ้าหญิงไม่รู้ แต่พระราชานึกสนุกก็ทรงยอมให้ทดสอบ พระองค์ทรงเรียกเจ้าหญิงเวนด์ลาออกมา เมื่อเจ้าหญิงออกมา เจ้าหญิงก็ร้องถามทิโม่ว่า
“เธอพูดภาษาอะไรได้บ้างล่ะจ๊ะ”
เจ้าหญิงถามอย่างไม่ใส่นัก เพราะคิดไปว่าทิโม่ก็คงไม่ต่างอะไรจากชายหนุ่มคนอื่นๆ แต่ทิโม่ก็ร้องเพลงออกมาให้เจ้าหญิงฟัง

ทีโม่ถามเจ้าหญิงว่านกกระจอกพูดว่าอะไร เจ้าหญิงทรงตอบไม่ได้ ทิโม่เฉลยว่า นกบอกว่า ขอบใจที่ช่วยข้าไว้ ปีกของข้าเกือบหายแล้วล่ะ จากนั้นทิโม่ก็เกาใต้คางของกระรอก มันร้องเคล็ก เคล็กๆๆ เจ้าหญิงก็ไม่รู้คำแปลอีก ทิโม่บอกว่า กระรอกบอกขอบคุณที่ช่วยชีวิตมันจากนายพราน ทิโม่ยังไม่ทันใช้อีกาทดสอบภาษากับเจ้าหญิง พระราชาก็ทรงสั่งให้หยุด เพราะไม่อยากเสยหน้าไปมากกว่านี้ เจ้าหญิงเวนด์ลาก็ร้องไห้เสียใจ ี่ทำให้พระราชาผิดหวัง ทิโม่ปลอบเจ้าหญิงว่า ทุกคนเรียนรู้ได้ ส่วนเจ้าหญิงเองก็ยอมรับว่ามีอีกหลายสิ่งที่ตนยังไม่รู้ พระราชานึกถึงคำสัญญาที่ให้ไว้ตั้งแต่ประกาศคำท้าออกไป จึงทรงประกาศให้เจ้าหญิงกับทิโม่อภิเษกสมรสกัน

Timo and the Princess Who Knew Many Languages (นิทานทิโม่กับเจ้าหญิงผู้รอบรู้ภาษา ฉบับภาษาอังกฤษ)
In the distant lands of Finland, in the far northern hemisphere, was a king who ruled over his kingdom. He had a daughter named Princess Vendla, who was very clever and had knowledge of all the languages that everyone used to communicate in the world.
♫ My name is Vendla; I am a beautiful and elegant princess. I can speak many languages. I can travel to any country, left and right. I can ask and answer. I speak well. I can speak many languages. La-la-la-la-la, I'm beautiful. I’m Princess Vendla, la-la-la. ♫
Princess Vendla sang happily. The king was also very proud of the princess and did not think anyone could beat his daughter's intelligence. So, the King announced that if any young man could speak a language that the princess did not know, Princess Vendla would be given to him. But they would be punished if they came and could not defeat the princess.
Many young men, upon seeing Princess Vendla's beauty, became fascinated. Since no one considered himself inferior to the princess, they all accepted the King's challenge.
Many rich and poor young men came to apply. Some of them even carried gold in their wagons as a dowry after defeating the princess. Many young men gradually approached the princess. One person, two people, three people, four people, five people, up to a hundred people. No one could defeat Princess Vendla. So, the men were punished in various ways. Some were imprisoned in a musty cave, some were thrown into the sea where the waves were strong and cold, some were exiled from the city to the wilderness without water, and many other means of punishment.
As news of this spread, no other young man dared to accept the King's challenge. The princess, who had enjoyed conquering at first, became lonely and lonelier.
“How sad. Is this truly my destiny?”

On the other side of the city, in a faraway land, was also a young shepherd who was poor but kind-hearted. But more importantly, he could talk and knew the language of animals. His name was Timo.

One day, Timo wanted to go on an adventure in a city he’d never been to, so he left the village. On the way, he heard the birds chirp with pain. Since Timo understood animal language, he knew that this was not a normal cry. When he followed the voice, he found a sparrow with a broken wing on the side of the path. Timo talked to the little bird so as not to shock it. The sparrow asked Timo to help him heal the wound. When he was finished, Timo feared that this bird might become prey for other animals if left unattended. Timo then told the sparrow to live in his satchel first; when the little bird became stronger, he could go. The little bird allowed Timo to put him in his satchel for safety.
They continued walking for a while when Timo heard a squirrel cry for help.

“Help, my leg is stuck in a trap.”
Timo helped the squirrel out of the trap and treated his wound. With compassion, Timo told the squirrel to stay in his satchel first, and he could go when his wound was healed. The squirrel allowed Timo to put him in the satchel with the sparrow for him to rest until his legs healed.
Without walking for too long, Timo heard the sound of crying caw, caw, caw.
So, Timo called out to ask what’s happened. The crow said that his mate had disappeared and didn’t know whether the city villagers had taken her. Timo, therefore, invited the crow to enter the city together. The crow was reassured that someone who spoke its language would journey with him. But with exhaustion from searching for his mate all day, the crow then asked to go into the bag as well. And they all continued their journey together.
Upon arriving in the city, Timo sat down to rest, drink and feed water to the bird, the squirrel, and the crow. Timo overheard the townspeople talking about the King's challenge. The three animals in the bag wanted their kind, Timo, to have a better life, so they urged him to try it out. And so, Timo traveled to the palace.
In front of the large and beautiful palace, the soldier guarding the gates took Timo to meet the King. When the King saw Tito, he was amused that a young shepherd would take on the challenge against a princess who knew every language. But for the sake of it, the King agreed to the challenge. He summoned Princess Vendla, and when she came out, the princess then asked Timo,
“So, what languages can you speak?”
The princess innocently asked for she thought Timo would be no different from the other young men. But Timo sang out for the princess,
♫I'm Timo. I'm not clever; I don’t brag. I'm Timo. I never get angry. My name is Timo. Small and large animals like to talk to me. They like to meet and greet. (Animal sounds) Because I know, know, know the language of all beings. Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalala Lalalalalalalalalalala, my name is Timo.♫
This time the Princess and the King watched with interest. Timo slowly stroked the sparrow's head, and it chirped.
Timo asked the Princess what the sparrow said, but the Princess could not answer. Timo replied that the bird said thank you for saving me. My wings are almost healed. Then Timo scratched under the squirrel's chin, and it yelled, "Clack, clack." The Princess still didn't know what he said. Timo said the squirrel thanked him for saving him from the hunter. But before Timo could test the crow’s language on the princess, the King ordered him to stop, for he didn’t want to be humiliated any further. Princess Vendla wept for disappointing the King, but Timo comforted the princess and encouraged her that anyone could learn something new. As for the princess, she admitted that there were many things that she didn’t yet know.
The King remembered the promise he had made since the challenge started. Therefore, he announced that the Princess and Timo should wed,
Timo would happily take the princess into the forest daily to learn the animals’ languages.
